Xiaomi recently launched its affordable Redmi 5 smartphone in India. A successor to last year’s Redmi 4, the new smartphone will be going on first sale today, with prices starting at Rs 7,999. One of the closest competitors of the Redmi 5 top end variant is the Honor 9 Lite, and if you’re confused between the two, we try to make the buying decision easy for you. Here’s how the smartphones compare based on their price, specifications and features.
Price and availability
As mentioned above, the Redmi 5 base variant with 2GB of RAM and 16GB onboard storage starts at Rs 7,999. The 3GB RAM with 32GB storage variant is priced at Rs 8,999, whereas the 4GB RAM with 64GB storage variant is priced at Rs 10,999. You can purchase the smartphone exclusively via Amazon India or from mi.com.
The Honor 9 Lite, on the other hand, is priced at Rs 10,999 for the 3GB RAM and 32GB storage variant, whereas the 4GB RAM with 64GB storage variant is priced at Rs 14,999. The smartphone is available to purchase exclusively from Flipkart.
Design, display size and resolution
The Redmi 5 comes with a hard-plastic frame with metal place at the back, whereas the Honor 9 Lite comes with a metal frame sandwiched between front and back glass. Both smartphones feature a modern tall display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The Redmi 5 is equipped with a 5.7-inch HD+ display running at a resolution of 1440x720pixels, whereas the Honor 9 Lite flaunts a slightly larger 5.65-inch full HD+ display with a resolution of 1080×2160 pixels.
Chipset and storage
Under the hood, the Redmi 5 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 octa-core SoC, whereas the Honor 9 Lite is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 659 octa-core SoC. While Redmi 5 comes in three onboard storage options – 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, the Honor 9 Lite comes in two storage options – 32GB and 64GB. Both smartphones come with a hybrid SIM card slot, which allows you to use two nano SIM cards or one SIM card and one microSD card for storage expansion.
In the photography department, the Redmi 5 comes with a 12-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, and a 5-megapixel front camera with LED flash. The Honor 9 Lite, on the other hand, comes with a quad-camera setup, which is a first in this price segment. You get a 13-megapixel primary camera for clicking photos and recording videos, supplemented by a 2-megapixel secondary sensor that lets you add DSLR-like bokeh effects to your photos. The setup is the same – both on the front and at the back.
Battery and connectivity
While the Redmi 5 comes with a 3,300mAh battery, the Honor 9 Lite comes with a slightly smaller 3,000mAh battery. Connectivity options on both smartphone include dual SIM card slots, 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11 and GPS.
OS and other features
Lastly, when it comes to operating system, the Redmi 5 runs on the older Android 7.1.2 Nougat OS with MIUI 9.2 skin, whereas the Honor 9 Lite runs on the latest Android 8.0 Oreo with EMUI 8 skin running on top. While both smartphones feature a fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication, the Honor 9 Lite also comes with Face Unlock facial recognition feature.
Honor has also added ‘Ride Mode’ to encourage safe smartphone usage while bike riding. Once the feature is enabled, callers will be notified that the user is currently riding, and cannot answer calls.
Clearly, if you have budget constraints, the Redmi 5 base variant could be an apt choice, but if you’re considering to buy the top end variant, the Honor 9 Lite sounds like a proposition for the features you get in that price range.
