Xiaomi has today launched Redmi 5, the compact smartphone with thin bezel design in India. The Redmi 5 was launched in China last year, and it can be seen as the successor to last year’s Redmi 4 series in India.

Xiaomi launched Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in India last month, and the new Redmi 5 is essentially low-power version of those two devices. The Redmi 5 will target similar offerings like the InFocus Vision 5 and the Infinix Hot S3. Xiaomi had a stellar run last year in India with strong demand for its Redmi Note 4 and Redmi 4 phones and the new Redmi 5 and Redmi Note 5 series announced last month are expected to replicate that success.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 price and availability

Xiaomi has launched three variants of the Redmi 5 in India. The 2GB RAM variant is priced at Rs 7,999, while the 3GB and 4GB RAM variants will retail for Rs 8,999 and Rs 10,999 respectively . The Redmi 5 will go on sale starting March 20, and will be available in black, gold, lake blue and rose gold colors exclusively on Amazon India.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 specifications, features

In terms of design, the Redmi 5 looks similar to the Redmi Note 5, but boasts a smaller display. It sports a metal unibody design with bezels surrounding the display having been trimmed remarkably. The smartphone flaunts a 5.7-inch HD+ LCD display with a resolution of 1440×720 pixels, and support for taller 18:9 aspect ratio.

While the Redmi Note 5 gets a Snapdragon 625 SoC, the Redmi 5 makes do with an octa-core Snapdragon 450 chipset. It comes in three storage variants with 2GB RAM variant offering 16GB storage while the 32GB storage variant comes with option for either 3GB or 4GB RAM. The device also comes with Adreno 506 GPU, which is a major improvement over Redmi 4.

On the camera front, the Redmi 5 features a 12-megapixel sensor with phase detection autofocus, and support for 1080p video recording at 30 frames per second. It also offers a 5-megapixel image sensor that supports 1080p video recording. In terms of connectivity, the Redmi 5 supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, 4G with VoLTE calling.

Since the Redmi 5 has switched to a full screen design, the fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back. The smartphone runs MIUI 9 based on Android 7.0 Nougat, and is backed by a 3,300mAh battery.
