Xiaomi has today announced that it is increasing the prices of its Redmi Note 5 Pro smartphone, and the Mi TV 4 smart TV. The company’s India MD Manu Kumar Jain took to Twitter to announce the price hike. The move comes after the government recently imposed a 10 percent duty on imports of printed circuit boards (PCBs), camera modules, and connectors. The new pricing will be applicable starting May 1 across Mi.com, Mi Home stores, Flipkart, and offline retail stores.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro was launched in India for Rs 13,999, and after the hike of Rs 1,000, it will now set you back by Rs 14,999 for the 4GB RAM with 64GB storage model. In a statement, Jain mentioned that those who have pre-booked the smartphone for Rs 13,999 won’t be affected by the hike. Also, the price hike is only for the base model, and the top-end model with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage will continue to retail at Rs 16,999.

“In order to ramp up supply for Redmi Note 5 Pro, we are importing a significant amount of PCBAs as our local PCBA production would only ramp up 100% by CY Q3 2018. With the recent changes in tax structure on PCBA imports and the depreciation of the rupee (by ~5% since the beginning of the year), this has resulted in a significant increase in costs for us,” Manu Kumar Jain said in an announcement.
