Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 3 was a game changer in the affordable smartphone segment, and the Redmi Note 4 continued the same. In fact, the Redmi Note 4 was one of Xiaomi’s top-selling smartphones in India. Now, a year later, the Chinese smartphone maker has launched the Redmi Note 5, which brings incremental upgrades to keep up with the latest trends, without breaking the price barrier.
Besides retaining the metal unibody, one of the highlights of the Redmi Note 5 is 5.99-inch Full HD+ display running at a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels, and an aspect ratio of 18:9. The Redmi Note 5 is offered in two storage variants – 3GB of RAM with 32GB storage priced at Rs 9,999, and 4GB of RAM with 64GB storage, priced at Rs 11,999. The smartphone will be available exclusively via Flipkart and mi.com. It will be offered in black, gold, Rose Gold and blue color variants.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 specifications and features
In terms of hardware, there isn’t much of a difference compared to the Redmi Note 4. The new smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with Adreno 506 GPU, 3GB/4GB of RAM, and 32GB/64GB storage. A hybrid SIM card slot is also present, allowing you to use two SIM cards, or one SIM card and a microSD card.
In the photography department, Xiaomi has equipped the Redmi Note 5 with a 12-megapixel main camera of aperture f/2.2 and pixel size of 1.25um. It is paired with a dual-tone LED flash. Up front, you have a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, for selfies and video calling.
Armed with a 4,000mAh battery, the Redmi Note 5 doesn’t support fast charging. Connectivity options on the smartphone include Bluetooth, dual-SIM card slots with 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi and GPS. In the software department, the Redmi Note 5 runs Android 7.1.2 Nougat with a layer of MIUI 9, which is a bit disappointing. However, the smartphone will be updated to Android 8.0 Oreo in the coming months.
At its price point, the Redmi Note 5 will compete with the Infinix Hot S3 and Honor 9 Lite, both of which have their own USP and come with 18:9 display.
