Xiaomi might be working on another budget smartphone aimed at emerging markets like India. The Chinese smartphone maker has already launched three devices in the form of Redmi 5, Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in India so far. It might soon add another smartphone named Redmi S2 in the entry and mid-range segment.
According to XDA Developers, the details of the Redmi S2 were spotted in firmware files obtained by the publication. The report says the Redmi S2 will be a cheap device with features like dual cameras and face unlock mechanism. The face unlock mechanism, in particular, is interesting for a budget device since it is only available on Redmi Note 5 Pro and flagship Mi MIX 2S. The leak suggests that Xiaomi will market the Redmi S2 as a camera-centric smartphone in the budget and mid-range smartphone segment.
Xiaomi Redmi S2 Specifications
In terms of specifications, the Redmi S2 is expected to feature thin bezel design with a display supporting HD+ resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels and an 18:9 aspect ratio. There is no clarity on the display size but it could be 5.7-inches considering the budget price point. The firmware also reveals that it will be powered by listed as MSM8953, which is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC also found on Redmi Note 5.
The display resolution and processor model suggest the Redmi S2 will fall in between Redmi 5 and Redmi Note 5. Further, the report notes that Redmi S2 will have 16GB storage and support additional storage via microSD card slot. There is no mention of RAM in the firmware but it would be between 2GB and 3GB since Xiaomi is targeting the budget segment here.

The firmware mentions that the smartphone will launch in India and China if not other markets. Xiaomi has grown to become the largest smartphone brand in India due to strong sales of its budget and mid-range smartphones.
