Today Xiaomi added a second smartphone to its Redmi Y series. Like last year’s Redmi Y1, the new Redmi Y2 also is focused at offering a great selfie clicking experience. So just how different is the Redmi Y2 from last year’s Redmi Y1? We compare them to find out.
Xiaomi Redmi Y2 vs Redmi Y1: Pricing
Last year, Xiaomi launched two variants of the Redmi Y1 – 32GB+3GB RAM priced at Rs 8,999, and 64GB+4GB RAM priced at Rs 10,999. The new Redmi Y2 also comes with similar two variants, priced at Rs 9,999 and Rs 12,999 respectively. The new smartphone is set to go on sale from June 12 via Amazon India, mi.com, and Mi Home stores.
Xiaomi Redmi Y2 vs Redmi Y1: Display and performance
The one big difference between the two smartphones is the display. Where the Redmi Y1 featured a 5.5-inch HD display, the Redmi Y2 flaunts a more contemporary 5.99-inch HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio.
While both devices feature the same memory options, Xiaomi has upgraded the chipset powering the devices. The Redmi Y1 was launched with a Snapdragon 435 chipset under the hood, while the Redmi Y2 comes with the reliable Snapdragon 625 octa-core chipset. Both devices also feature a 3,000mAh battery that Xiaomi says is good enough to last a day on a single charge.
Xiaomi Redmi Y2 vs Redmi Y1: Cameras
The USP of both the smartphones is the selfie camera up front. On paper, the two devices may show a 16-megapixel snapper accompanied by a selfie flash, but there is a difference. The camera on the Redmi Y2 is backed by Artificial Intelligence (AI), which monitors the photos you click and over time improves the overall results. The new camera also comes with a software-assisted Portrait Mode to help click selfies with a blurred background.
Unlike the Redmi Y1, the new Xiaomi smartphone comes with a dual-camera setup at the back. This AI-backed setup includes a pair of 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel snappers. The rear cameras too get a dedicated Portrait mode.
Xiaomi Redmi Y2 vs Redmi Y1: Connectivity and software
Both devices feature the same set of connectivity options like dual-SIM card slots, 4G VoLTE support, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. For security the two come with a fingerprint sensor. But the Redmi Y2 also comes with a Face Unlock feature for an extra layer of protection. On the software front, both run MIUI 9, with the Redmi Y2 launching with Android Oreo under the MIUI interface.
