Xiaomi will announce its first new product for 2018 in India on February 14. The teaser page for the event has already revealed that the company will launch the successor to Redmi Note 4 aka Redmi Note 5 on Wednesday. The smartphone is expected to be exclusively available on Flipkart but the company might have more devices to announce on that day.
Xiaomi has posted a teaser video which shows a mystery device that doesn’t look like a smartphone. The teaser shows people looking at a slim device from different angles, an action synonymous with the way you watch television. Xiaomi has been rumored to expand its offerings in India to include Mi TV for a long time and we might finally see the launch of Mi TV in India on Wednesday.

There are reports doing the rounds that the company plans to launch at least five new products on that day, but Xiaomi has not particularly detailed its plans for the big launch. Xiaomi started its India journey with smartphones but the company has expanded its product list to include fitness trackers, power banks, Mi Air Purifier, router, booster, speakers, earphones to name a few. The television space has been a hotly contested segment with even homegrown brands like Micromax doing better than mainstream names like Samsung, Sony and LG.
While we will have to wait until February 14 to know whether Xiaomi indeed launches it Mi TV in the Indian market, it is almost confirmed that the company will introduce the Redmi Note 5 here. There are conflicting reports about the Redmi Note 5 being a new device and some reports suggest it will be a rebranded variant of Redmi 5 Plus, which was launched in China in December last year.
In terms of specifications, the Redmi 5 Plus features a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display, Snapdragon 625 chipset, 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB internal storage. The smartphone is expected to sport a 12-megapixel primary camera with f/2.2 aperture and a 5-megapixel front camera with 1080p video recording. Other features include WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, microUSB port and rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.
It is important to note that Xiaomi has not launched Redmi Note 5 in China and reports suggest that it will have pack an updated Snapdragon 636 processor, up to 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. It is also said to feature a dual rear camera setup and launch in the second quarter of 2018.
On the success of Redmi Note 4, Xiaomi has dethroned Samsung as the leader in India’s fledgling smartphone space and the new devices will have to ensure that the company stays in that place.
