Xiaomi entered the Indian smartphone market in 2014, and in just three years, the company has grown to become the number one brand in the country owing to its feature-rich yet affordable smartphones. Started as an online-only brand, Xiaomi now aims to penetrate the offline market further with more products launching this year.
In a Reuters interview, Xiaomi India head Manu Kumar Jain said, “If you look at 2017 and 2018 combined, the biggest change in our strategy is our focus on offline.” And quite rightly so; the company introduced its Mi Home concept in India last year, which is a physical retail store for Xiaomi products where customers can experience and purchase the devices.
There are already 17 Mi Home stores established in India, and the company plans to take the total number to 100 by mid-2019. According to the report, the company also plans to add more preferred partner stores that stock Xiaomi products.
Xiaomi already has a significant online presence, which accounts for about 80 percent of its revenue. Now, the company aims to expand its offline presence. To gain more business, Xiaomi is likely to launch as many as eight phones this year.
Jain said in the interview that Xiaomi will launch around six to eight phones this year across important price segments in the country. “We want to improve on whatever we launched in 2017 and also launch and plug whatever we think are the big use cases where we are not present,” he is quoted as saying in the report.
In addition to smartphones, Xiaomi also plans to launch at least one or two new smart products in 2018. In its home country, Xiaomi sells products ranging from smart purifiers to beds, and bedsheets. It is speculated that the company will introduce its range of TVs, scooters, and rice cookers in India.
If latest reports are anything to go by, the first smartphone for this year coming from Xiaomi’s stable could be the Redmi 5 Plus (re-branded as Redmi Note 5). The smartphone is said to add to the budget category with its 18:9 display, and also up the competition with the affordable pricing.
As for its global plans, the Xiaomi Mi 7, is the next big launch expected to take place at the upcoming MWC 2018 in Barcelona. The smartphone is likely to feature a Mi MIX 2-like design with bezel-less display along with a dual-camera setup. It is likely to run Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC under the hood.
