After dual cameras, it’s the notch and in-display fingerprint sensor which is taking the smartphone world by storm. One manufacturer after the other is looking at incorporating the new way of biometric authentication. The latest to follow suite is Xiaomi which is expected to add the in-display fingerprint sensor in its upcoming flagship smartphone, but that’s isn’t the anticipated Mi 7.

First introduced by Vivo in its X20 Plus UD smartphone, the in-display fingerprint sensing technology eliminates the need to add a physical sensor at the front or back of a device. This adds on the aesthetics by allowing for even narrower bezels. However, as the technology still needs perfection, manufacturers such as Samsung are shying away from adding the new technology.

As for Xiaomi’s upcoming device, firmware files obtained by XDA Developers hint at the inclusion of in-display fingerprint sensor not in the Mi 7, codenamed ‘dipper’, but in a possible variant of the Mi 7, allegedly called Mi 7 Plus and codenamed ‘ursa’.

Going by the report, the device codenamed ursa, is a flagship smartphone running Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC under the hood and fueled by a massive 4,000mAh battery. The smartphone is speculated to feature an OLED display and flaunt a notch design. Similarities between the ursa and dipper are said to be the camera’s optical zoom capabilities.

As the company is yet to make anything official, it is advisable to take the information with the proverbial grain of salt. The Mi 7, on the other hand, was recently spotted on Geekbench. Based on the listing, the smartphone managed to score 2,449 on single-score and 8,309 in multi-core test. As for specifications, it is likely to pack 6GB of RAM and flaunt a 6.01-inch OLED ‘notch’ display made by Samsung. It is also expected to get support for 7.5W wireless charging.

Earlier this week, Xiaomi introduced its Mi MIX 2S smartphone in China. It features a 5.99-inch full HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC paired with a 6GB/8GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB/256GB of internal storage. There’s a dual-camera setup at the back with a combination of 12-megapixel wide angle and 12-megapixel telephoto lens with AI scene detection and 4-axis OIS. Up front, there’s a 5-megapixel front camera with background blur feature. It runs Android 8.0 Oreo-based MIUI 9.
