Zomato Gold memberships sold like hot cakes on day of launch

Early bird prices and referral codes got Zomato users very excited.

Zomato has launched its premium membership program, Zomato Gold, in India, less than ten days after opening for sign-ups. And if reports are to be believed, memberships have been selling like hot cakes, with Zomato recording over 26,000 subscriptions on day one itself. At present, the service is available in select Indian metros, but Zomato plans to expand it to other cities too. It has partnered with over 1,200 restaurants, bars and cafes for the service, and Gold subscribers would stand to win complimentary food and beverages at any hour of the day. However, the offers are not valid on special/set menus and buffets.

Zomato had invited users promising special “early bird prices” last week. Gold is available at an inaugural price of Rs 299 (for three months) and Rs 999 (for 12 months). Roughly 30,000 Gold memberships were up for grabs on day one. Of this, 10,000 were released at discounted prices.

Interestingly, Zomato has made the deal sweeter by integrating referrals. With each referral, the sender gets an added month of subscription, while the receiver using the referral code to sign up gets a 25 percent discount on the membership. This is a smart move by Zomato to drive adoption using its existing user base. “We are super excited to bring Zomato Gold to India, and are sure our users, as well as restaurant partners, are both going to find this hugely beneficial,” Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal stated.  ALSO READ: Zomato explored a merger with Swiggy, but talks fell through: Report

Zomato Gold users will gain exclusive access to curated food and drinks events at Gold partner restaurants. They can also attend yacht parties, pub crawls, new restaurant openings, new menu previews, wine tasting sessions and exclusive influencer meet-ups, Zomato said in a statement. However, the company has issued a word caution to diners. “The restaurant staff might take some time to get used to Zomato Gold inspite of extensive training (staff churn in the restaurant industry is a problem to solve for another day!). Please reach out to our support team from the app in case you face any teething issues,” it said.
