Today, Asus launched its Zenfone Max Pro M1 smartphone in India in collaboration with Flipkart. Prices for the smartphone start at Rs 10,999, and the phone will be available to purchase from May 3. While Asus’ new smartphone boasts a competitive sheet of specifications and features, the Zenfone Max Pro M1 is much more than what’s on paper.
Call me biased, but what really stands out for me is that the new Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 runs stock Android 8.1 Oreo. My job has allowed me to experience different UIs on Android smartphones ranging from budget to ultra-premium segments. More often than not while a device has impressed me, I end up wishing it ran on stock Android. The same was the case with Asus devices in the past.
Asus’ smartphones, until now, have run on Android-based ZenUI. Apart from the relatively comical interface, what has always frustrated me is the need to individually update all the preloaded apps. By all, I truly mean all – from the phone and contacts apps to even the clock. In essence, every time you took a new Asus smartphone out of the box, you would end up having to update at least 50 apps.
But with the new Zenfone Max Pro M1 that isn’t the case. With stock Android, gone is the comical interface and the need to update hundreds of apps. The new smartphone doesn’t come with boatloads of pre-loaded apps either. Moreover, stock OS also means Asus will be able to release Android updates much earlier than it has traditionally done.
With the Zenfone Max Pro M1, Asus has turned its focus to the online smartphone market. This is a place dominated by the likes of Xiaomi (44 percent share), Lenovo/Motorola (18 percent), Samsung (15 percent), and Huawei (three percent) to name a few. To take on these brands, Asus has tied up with Flipkart to exclusively sell the new smartphone. But what does it really mean for consumers?
For buyers this means another brand to choose from when shopping for smartphones online. While that in itself is no selling point, do take into consideration that the Zenfone Max Pro M1 brings with it an aggressive price tag and stock Android. Not many devices fulfil those criteria. The only worthy devices that come to mind are the Xiaomi Mi A1 and the recently launched Nokia 6 (2018). Of these, the Mi A1 is close to the end of its product cycle, while the new Nokia 6 has yet to go on sale. Asus’ smartphone, on the other hand, will go on sale from May 3.
