Lenovo-owned Motorola has officially launched the Moto G6 and Moto E5 series smartphones. These devices were expected to arrive as early as Mobile World Congress 2018 in February but the company seems to have delayed the launch to bring out both the series at the same time. For Motorola, the Moto G series remains one of the most successful device portfolio and with Moto G6 series, the company is bringing modern and updated features to the portfolio.
The Moto G6 series announced yesterday includes the Moto G6, Moto G6 Play and Moto G6 Plus. The three smartphones will be aimed directly at similar budget offering from the Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. One of the key points here is that Moto G series addressed a gap in the market when it came out five years ago. In the recent past, the competing Chinese brands have addressed all the gaps in the price segment and the Moto G6 series will have a tough time competing against them.
Some of the key feature introductions with this year’s Moto G6 series the glass back similar to Moto X4, updated dual-camera system, updated hardware specifications and face unlock support, which is now becoming a must have among smartphones in every price bracket. So without further ado, let’s take a look at six key enhancements to Moto G6 series:
Moto G6 series drops the metal back in favor of a modern glass finish. The rear design of Moto G6 series now looks very much similar to that of Moto X4 smartphone. The back of these devices feature a scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla with a 3D contoured back. There is no denial that these phones looks despite their sub-Rs 20,000 price tag.
Moto G6 & G6 Plus, like last year's model, feature dual rear camera setup. Both the phones feature a combination of 12-megapixel and a 5-megapixel image sensors at the rear. These cameras also support dual-pixel autofocus and a wider f/1.7 aperture for better low-light photography. They now also support 4K video recording and object recognition features. There is also an 8-megapixel selfie camera.
With the new Moto G6 series, Motorola has added water repellant nano-coating to the display. This new p2i water-repellent coating will ensure that the phone is not damaged by accidental splashes or light rain.
The new Moto G6, Moto G6 Play and Moto G6 Plus also feature new displays supporting the taller 18:9 aspect ratio. These devices now come with thinner bezels compared to its predecessor. The Moto G6 Play gets a smaller 5.7-inch display with a HD+ resolution while Moto G6 and G6 Plus get a 5.7-inch and 5.9-inch display with Full HD+ displays respectively.
Motorola is taking a page from the success of Xiaomi, Apple and Huawei by bringing face unlock support. With Face Unlock, Moto G6 users can simply look at the device and the 8-megapixel front camera will trigger to authenticate the user and then unlock the device.
Moto G6 series runs the latest version of Android Oreo and include Moto enhancements like the front home button which also doubles up navigation button. There is also support for ambient display and Moto Voice functionality. With Moto G6 series, there is a possibility that these devices will be updated to Android P when it becomes available later this year.
