Mobile World Congress 2018, also referred to as the mecca of mobile enthusiasts, wraps up today at Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, Spain. The event was considerably quieter than expected with Chinese smartphone maker Huawei and South Korea’s LG deciding to not announce flagship smartphones at the event. While the event didn’t belong to smartphone makers, there was a surprising winner in the form of Android.
The MWC 2018 belonged to Android and its dominance as the operating system for mobiles became even more apparent. At the event, Google finally showed a bunch of smartphones running Android Oreo (Go edition), a lightweight version of Oreo and added entire suit of Nokia phones to its Android One platform. Google won big at MWC without much fanfare. If you are wondering how, here is a look at all the smartphones announced with Android Go and Android One at MWC 2018:
Alcatel launched its Alcatel 1X smartphone at sub-100 Euro price segment. The smartphone will be available in April with either Single-SIM or dual-SIM option. It has a 5.3-inch display, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage and MediaTek processor. The smartphone has a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo (Go edition) and packs a 2,460mAh battery.
ZTE Tempo Go is another Android Oreo (Go edition) smartphone with 5-inch display, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage and a Snapdragon 210 processor. The smartphone features a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front camera. It houses a 2,200mAh battery and Google is promising regular Android software updates.
Nokia 7 Plus is one of the premium smartphone to join the Android One program. It features a 6-inch display with 18:9 display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 mobile chipset, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It sports a dual rear camera setup with one 12-megapixel and one 13-megapixel sensor. It also has a 16-megapixel front camera with Zeiss optics. The smartphone runs Android Oreo and will receive Android P update later this year.
Nokia 8 Sirocco, priced at 749 Euro is the most premium Android One smartphone anyone buy right now. It features a stainless steel casing with glass back similar to that of iPhone X. It features a 5.5-inch QHD pOLED display, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage and Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset. The smartphone gets dual Zeiss optics at the back and a primary 5-megapixel front camera. The smartphone features a 3,260mAh battery and supports wireless charging. It also runs Oreo and will stay up-to-date with software from Google.
Nokia 6 (2018) is the third device from HMD Global with focus on Android One. It is upgrade to last year's Nokia 6 model and it features 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, 5.5-inch Full HD display. Powering the device is Snapdragon 630 mobile platform with 16-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera. It comes with 3,000mAh battery and relies on USB-C port.
General Mobile, the Turkish OEM showcased its own Android One device at MWC 2018. The smartphone named GM8 features a 5.7-inch HD+ display, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of storage and a Snapdragon 435 chipset. The smartphone features a 13-megapixel image sensor on both sides of the device. It is currently running Android 8.0 Oreo and will be a cheap device aimed at those who want an updated device at budget.
Spanish OEM BQ also showed its smartphones running Android Oreo and Android One branding at MWC 2018. The specifications of the device have not been revealed by the company but it says the Aquaris X2 and Aquaris X2 Pro will offer latest Android experience with security.
