Cooliris for Android review: One place to view all your photos

In a time when there are a plethora of social networks where you share photos, it can sometimes get a bit overwhelming to keep a track of all of them. Enter Cooliris, a photo gallery app which lets you view all your photos organized on a 3D wall. The app has finally arrived on the Android platform nearly two years after debuting on iOS. We got to spend some time with the app and here’s what we think of it.

The user interface with the grid view is similar to what we have seen on iOS and you can customize the homescreen a bit by changing the background image. The grids are essentially folders for the photos saved on your phone as well as social media networks. You can add photos from nearly 15 social networks and cloud services including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Google Drive, OneDrive and Evernote among others. While this is indeed an impressive list, we found a small flaw in the app. The app claims to feature Dropbox integration, yet for some reason you cannot link your account.

By default the app will show photos from the accounts already linked to your device, and you can add more folders/link accounts by clicking on the + icon and then selecting the service you want to link to. Once inside a folder, the photos are all laid out in a cool 3D wall and you can swipe horizontally to scroll through them. You can select what photo albums you want to view, so for example you can look at photos on your News Feed, or just those that are in your album. There is also a slide show button if you want the app to automatically scroll through photos. The animations aren’t as smooth as what we experienced on our iPhone.

The deep integration with the linked accounts means you can share any photo on a social network from within the app, like a Facebook photo, and if you like a photo on any platform you can simply download it to your phone.

Cooliris does its job quite well and is certainly much more useful than the stock gallery app you get on Android. Initially, the app will only be available for devices running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and above. But the company has mentioned that it is working on a series of updates that will make it run on older devices as well.

You can head over to the Google Play Store to download Cooliris.
