The palm-sized DigiTek DBS 004 Bluetooth speaker provides powerful audio output but with a few shortcomings.

Aiming to make an impact among the biggies is DigiTek with its DBS 004 Bluetooth speaker. Launched last month, the DigiTek DBS 004 is priced at Rs 1,595 and is available for purchase via online platforms. The DigiTek DBS 004 Bluetooth speaker is small and compact which fits in the palm of your hands. We have been using the Bluetooth speaker for some time and here’s our review of it.

DigiTek DBS 004 Design and Specifications

Design and look is one of the deciding factors when purchasing any electronic product. The DigiTek DBS 004 is octagonal in shape measuring 9 x 9 x 2.5 cm. With a lot of flat surfaces, the Bluetooth speaker can be placed on different sides depending on your preference. Clad in a silicone body with blue colored borders, the DigiTek DBS 004 doesn’t look very appealing, in my opinion. The front portion has the 6W speaker. It is also available in a black and yellow combination.

There’s a small loop at the top of the speaker where you can place a hook or carabiner. Since it is quite light weighing 200 grams, you can hook the speaker to your bag or carry it easily. There are three function keys on the top-right side which include the volume rocker and the power/mode key. On the left side, the 3.5mm audio jack, USB port, and microSD and a TF card slot is located. These connectivity ports are covered with a flap.

In terms of specifications, the DigiTek DBS 004 is equipped with Bluetooth 4.2, and is powered by a 600mAh battery. The speaker also comes with FM radio support, and is IPX5 certified making it splash proof. It has a built-in microphone for hands-free call support. DigiTek DBS 004 Performance

While testing the DigiTek DBS 004 speaker for usage, the first thing I tested was the Bluetooth connectivity. At first, I connected the Bluetooth speaker with an iPhone SE which was a smooth and seamless process. Although there isn’t any visible indication of a Bluetooth device connected, the voice prompt does the job. It alerts you on when the device is turned on, when it’s ready to pair, and when a device is paired. It also alerts on low battery mode which is annoyingly repetitive until the device has been charged again. There is a blue LED light but it’s visible only when the flap is open since it’s located alongside the connectivity ports.

Coming back to its Bluetooth connectivity, after the first successful pairing, there were some complications faced. Firstly, the speaker wasn’t visible on the Bluetooth devices list even after turning it off and on. You can clear the paired devices history by holding and pressing the play button. Even after doing so, the speaker still couldn’t be paired. After many tries, I managed to get it working. There were no connectivity issues thereafter. Coming to its audio quality, the volume levels are pretty impressive making it a small powerhouse. It’s perfect for a stereo sound in a single room but can be used for a party as well. The company claims ‘full bass’ and ‘super bass’ but the sound isn’t really bass-heavy. The treble is well balanced but it fails in providing the promised bass. Adding extra bass from your device’s equalizer helps add some effect. We played Hip Hop tracks such as Congratulations by Post Malone and Both by Gucci Mane but the result was more of what you’d expect from the pop genre.  However, for indie rock tracks like Tokyo Inn and TOMBOY by Hyukoh, the audio quality was quite decent. Setting the volume at the highest didn’t cause any tearing in the sound either.

We tried the FM radio feature as well. You need to long press the play button to search for FM channels. Once a channel is discovered it will automatically start playing. You can switch between channels by pressing the volume keys. The speaker did detect an FM channel and started playing but only for a brief time. FM radio highly depends on the availability of signal waves, and the location might have been one with poor connectivity, so we don’t want to judge the device too harshly on this. Speaking about power backup, DigiTek DBS 004 promises three to eight hours of music playback on a charge of three to five hours. We charged the speaker for about an hour and it lasted for a total of three hours on continuous music playback. You get a small USB cable for charging which is indicated by a red LED light. The DigiTek DBS oo4 is splash proof and that might excite some users. The IPX5 rating makes the device splash proof, but note that it isn’t waterproof and shouldn’t be placed under water or immersed in water. Testing its capability, we splashed water on the device a few times and it worked completely fine.

DigiTek DBS 004 Verdict

If you’re looking for a small and compact Bluetooth speaker with powerful enough sound quality, then you can go for the DigiTek DBS 004. But looking at it from more angles like design and bass performance, it doesn’t impress. Although the speaker comes with an affordable price tag, it doesn’t quite have what it takes to compete with some of the more popular brands such as JBL, Philips, Portronics, and F&D.
