Winter is definitely coming, but, there are a couple of months to go. However, here in Mumbai, it’s the imminent arrival of ‘October heat’ that worries me more. And at times like these, inexpensive desk fans come to the rescue. Today, BGRIndia, has a quirky gadget in the house from flintstop.com, that plugs into any USB port. In the era of minimalism, a product like this saves a lot of your desk space with its 3-in-1 feature: cool breeze, a clock, and some extra light. The geek that resides within me was really fascinated by this Rs 1,199 USB Clock Fan! I know it’s just a clock, but it’s a cool clock! I really liked the idea of a fan giving me the time, but is that all I really got out of this? Let’s find out in the review below.

In terms of aesthetics, the design is very simple with a camel-like long neck where one end is the USB port while the other end comes with a cylindrical body with two fan blades on top of it. On the body, there is a round button that acts as the on/off button. On one blade, you have the LED array placed that shows the digital clock when the fan is turned on.

Having used the Xiaomi Mi Fan before, the bendable neck seemed to be too long in my opinion and I personally ended up coiling it up a bit every time I used it. However, folding its neck did not really help much as it automatically uncoiled itself, and I found it difficult to stabilize it at a fixed position. Another problem that the long neck caused is that it adds more weight to the USB port that the fan plugs into. Upon turning the fan on, the clock takes about three seconds to appear.

Since it’s USB powered, not only can you attach it to your computer or laptop, you can even attach it to a power bank. The noise is very minimal and it works best in the dark or against a dark background.

It is quite unique to see the LED lights spin and perfectly represent a clock face, even with the ticking second, minute and hour hands. The fact that it is able to perform the movements while spinning is really cool to look at. The fan blades themselves are very soft and fragile, so you do not have to worry about clipping/scratching or cutting your hands or fingers. In fact, you can stop the blades anytime without causing any injury. When the blade is stopped only the green LED light is lit, the red ones do not light up unless the fan blade is spinning.

Also, I think a second button to toggle the LED display on or off would have been a nice addition to the USB fan clock. Adjusting the time is simple enough, using the single button. You hold to put it in adjust mode, then either tap or hold again to adjust the hands to where you want it. The clock even remembers the time for up to a year when switched off, so you don’t have to keep adjusting it every time you power it down.

The fan has been working well for the time that I’ve had it. It’s simple to adjust and is a definitely a head turner. The only thing I found annoying is that the vibration from the fan slowly loosens the USB connection, so I have to push it back in every once in a while, which I think is no big deal. Other than that, It’s been a joy using the USB fan. Bottom line, you are getting what you paid for, even though there are things I would change about this product, I still kind of like it.

Verdict

Overall the USB powered LED Clock fan is a great gift for a loved one, or you could even just buy it for yourself for fun. It’s useful if you need a bi of face cooling at your desk or need a fun new desk clock, and is ideally suited if you have USB ports on your monitor or a USB hub on your desk where it can be positioned to the left or right of you and slightly above while you are using your computer. It’s worth considering for the Rs 1,199 price tag, and can be bought at flintstop.com.
