Huawei has set the cat among the pigeons with the launch of its latest phone the Honor 9i. The company has been giving us great products at fantastic prices, but with the 9i they have raised the bar to a whole different level. For starters, there’s the quad camera. Yes, you read that right. Four cameras! Two at the back and two in front for a double, double delight. Then, there’s the bezel-less display that has an amazing 18:9 aspect ratio. There’s the metal unibody which makes it look classy and feel premium Which brings us to the price and here’s the kicker it’s just Rs 17,999/-. Yes, you read that right too!
The stand out feature of the phone has to be the double delight cameras. Two sensors up front and back. The primary rear camera is a 16-megapixel sharpshooter with a 2-megapixel secondary sensor to capture the depth and enable portrait mode. Upfront you get a 13-megapixel selfie camera that also has the support of a 2-megapixel secondary sensor. There is a single LED flash at the back and a soft selfietoning flash in the front.
Launch the camera app and you get a simple interface with the photo/video selector on one side and toggles on the other. There are controls for the flash, aperture mode, moving picture mode and portrait mode. Swiping right gives you different shooting modes which include HDR, panorama and video. There are also pro modes for photos and videos, slow-mo, filters, effects and a few others. The serious photographer has the option to download more modes. Pictures appear bright and colors vibrant in daylight shooting. Low-light performance is also fairly good with the pictures having a great amount of detailing, thanks to the secondary sensors.
The metal unibody gives the Honor 9i its premium look and feel. The phone is available currently in two colors Prestige Gold, and Graphite Black. These accentuate the premium look and feel of the phone. The curved sides and edges feel comfortable to hold. The back has a matte finish which adds to the overall look and also provides a better grip. The LED flash, cameras and fingerprint scanner line down the center of the back. It is easy to reach the fingerprint scanner even when operating the phone one-handed. The big display means that the metal earpiece, sensors and front cameras have been pushed right to the upper edge. This gives the front a clean look that is dominated by that gorgeous screen.
The Honor 9i is the only phone in its price category that comes with a 5.9-inch FullView HD+ display that has an aspect ratio of 18:9. The big display however does not make for an unwieldy phone as Huawei has reduced bezels on the side to a bare minimum. Watching videos on the edge-to-edge screen is just amazing. The display is bright and the colors are vibrant even in broad daylight. This phone was certainly built for non-stop viewng!
The Honor 9i is powered by a Huawei Kirin 659, which has eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores – four cores are clocked at 1.7GHz and the other four cores at 2.36GHz. There is 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage which is expandable via the hybrid dual-SIM slot. This is a dual-SIM device with two Nano-SIM slots, but you can swap the second SIM for a microSD card of up to 128GB. The phone sports a 3340mAh battery which is also larger than what you would get in phones of this price point.
The device sports the EMUI interface on top of Android Nougat. There are gestures that simplify taking screenshots and launching apps. Honor calls these knuckle gestures, and they work by knocking on the screen. You can double-knock to take a screenshot or do a two-knuckle tap to start screen recording. You also have the option to launch apps and enter a split-screen mode by tracing letters on the screen. The phone has a few custom apps including HiCare – a service support app; HiGame – a gaming app store; plus Hi Honor and Honor Community which are Web shortcuts.
Honor 9i builds on the Honor tradition of packing in a lot of great hardware at unbelievable price points. This phone has been built to satisfy every possible need of a smartphone user.
