Is Apple about to unveil a smart home platform at the WWDC next week?

The Financial Times claims that when Apple's World Wide Developers Conference gets underway on June 2, the big reveal won't be a smartwatch or a 12.9-inch tablet, but a new initiative that puts the iPhone at the heart of the connected home. There are already a number of ‘smart' products, from lights to door locks and even security systems that can all be controlled remotely by launching a dedicated app. More →

Apple TV getting ready for prime time

The next-generation miniature set-top-box, which could be unveiled as early as this June, looks set to feature Siri-like voice commands and games console features and is set to become a serious Apple product in its own right. The hockey-puck-sized device that plugs into the back of a television set and connects to the internet, launches dedicated apps and enables the streaming of content from other Apple products, be they Macs, iPhones or iPads, has until now been described as just an interesting hobby by the company. But all of that is set to change. In its latest earnings call on Wednesday, Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, revealed that to date, 20 million Apple TVs have been sold and that it is becoming a key source of revenue, so much so that the company is no longer calling it a hobby. Apple is reportedly testing 65-inch TV

Sources in South Korea claim that the technology company Apple is working with suppliers on a giant OLED screen and the finished device is expected to go into production in 2015. Or so claims the The Korea Herald in a piece published Sunday that doesn't name the local manufacturer involved in the project but does quote Lee Seung-woo, an analyst at Seoul-based IBK Securities, who said: "The company is making 65-inch organic light-emitting diode sample panels for Apple's iTV in collaboration with Apple. However, it is not certain whether Apple will use it for the mass production of its long-rumored iTV as it is still running tests." More →

Apple has bought a start-up called Matcha.TV according to the Wall Street Journal. Apple has also confirmed this to the Journal in its own cryptic manner stating that it buys companies from time to time without revealing what it's going to do with it. Apple’s much hyped iPhone 5S is predicted to be unveiled on September 20, which would be two days after the prediction predicts Apple would launch iOS 7, which is September 18. International Business Times' technology editor Dave Smith has applied some interesting math and noted the pattern of last few releases by Apple. On the basis of these and knowing that how conscious Apple is about such things, he is predicting that the iPhone maker is most likely to follow the same pattern for the unveiling of its next model of products as well. Samsung has launched its Android based smart TV box named HomeSync at the MWC. With this launch, Samsung seems to hit the market to compete with its ardent foe Apple which makes the diminuative Apple TV. Samsung HomeSync is similar to various Android run TV hubs which provide smart TV experiences while enabling users to make use of Android features as well, though what sets it apart is that it comes with a massive storage space of 1TB and can be used with Galaxy smartphones as well. Moments after we revealed Apple putting up Apple TV product page on its India site, it has quietly launched it in the country for Rs 8,295. [UPDATE: Apple updated its India site to reflect the price revision. We hear that the earlier price did not include taxes.] We were earlier told it would be priced at Rs 6,990. Apple TV page goes live on Apple’s India site, launch imminent

Apple has put up the product page for the Apple TV on its India website. The images on the page have been customized for India with Bollywood flicks like Ek Tha Tiger and Veer Zaara gracing the television screen. This is by far the biggest hint we have received of Apple's plans to launch the product in India after BGR India exclusively reported about it in December. More →
