Apple’s MacBook Pro line gets quiet spec bump

Apple on Monday quietly updated its line of MacBook Pro notebook computers with faster processors and more storage. The late-2011 MacBook bump comes a bit later than expected, but it is somewhat in line with various reports. Apple’s low-end $1,199 13-inch MacBook Pro laptop now includes a 2.4GHz dual-core Core i5 processor with 500GB of storage, and $1,499 will now buy a 2.8GHz dual-core Core i7 with a 750GB hard drive. The 15-inch MacBook Pro includes a 2.2GHz quad-core Core i7 and an AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card for $1,799 or a 2.4GHz quad-core Core i7 and AMD Radeon HD 6770M GPU for $2,199. Atop Apple’s laptop lineup, the base-level 17-inch MacBook pro now includes a 2.4GHz quad-core Core i7 processor and the AMD 6770M for $2,499, and a fully-loaded 17-inch model includes a 2.5GHz quad-core Core i7 CPU and a 512GB solid state drive for $3,849. New MacBook Airs, Mac minis, Apple Thunderbolt Display revealed as Apple Store goes down

The Apple Store is down, though it looks like 9to5Mac has spoiled the surprise. According to the Apple blog, here are the leaked specifications for the new Apple products launching this week:

  • Mac mini Base model: 2.3GHz CPU with 2GB of RAM, and 500GB of storage
  • Mac mini: 2.5GHz CPU with 4GB of RAM, and, 500GB of storage
  • Mac mini server: 2.0GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM, and two 500GB hard drives
  • MacBook Air 11″: Base model: 1.6GHz CPU, 2GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage
  • MacBook Air 11″: 1.6GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage
  • MacBook Air 11″: Built to order model: 1.8GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage
  • MacBook Air 13″: Base model: 1.7GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage
  • MacBook Air 13″: 1.7GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM, 256GB of storage
  • MacBook Air 13″: Built to order: 1.8GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM, 256GB of storage

The Mac minis are reported to run new Intel Sand Bridge chips, while the MacBook Airs run Intel’s Core i5 and i7 processors. Launching alongside the new MacBook Airs and Mac minis are a new Apple display, though the only difference seems to be the name, rebranded as the Apple Thunderbolt Display, and the ability to have a VESA-compatible mount for them. New MacBook Pros add power, at lower prices…again!

It has been a trend that we have been noticing over the past few years - Apple has been bumping up the specs of its notebooks, even while bringing down their prices. True to form, the fruity company from Cupertino has done it again in its latest refresh of the MacBook Pro range. Among the additions are "next generation dual and quad Core processors" (yep, that's from the release), better graphics, higher resolution FaceTime HD cameras, and a new I/O technology called Thunderbolt that is expected to add a new dimension to connectivity with external high performance peripherals with speeds of 10 gigabits per second. Oh, and the price of the range now starts from Rs 69,900 as compared to Rs 72,900 in the previous generation. More →
