Apple hints at future iPad nomenclature

Pre-orders for the iPad mini have gone live moments ago in a number of countries but most people are still bewildered about Apple's move of discontinuing the 'new' iPad that was launched only earlier this year in favor of another 'new' iPad but has retained the iPad 2, which is already more than a year old. The fourth-generation iPad has minor changes over the model it replaces and will be casually called the iPad 4 in the market just like the previous generation iPad was called the iPad 3. So it is likely to be a bit weird at retail stores where one can buy the iPad 2 and iPad 4 but not the iPad 3. But this is likely to change early next year, if we are reading the hints that Apple is dropping correctly. More →

Apart from all the MacBooks, Apple has also released a new smart case for the second and third generation iPads. At the moment, the smart case will only be available in polyeurathane in six colors - dark gray, light gray, red, green, pink and blue. The new smart case is priced at $49 from the US Apple Store. We are not sure when and at what price it will be available in India but we will update this post as soon as we find out. Apple is also offering free engraving for personalizing the smart case for those who order it from the online store. (Apple does not have an online store in India.)

Bootleggers use special bags to smuggle new iPad into China

Apple's new iPad was launched on March 7 and is currently available in 10 countries - US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Australia. While people from other countries have to either wait for the device to get launched in their country or can get it from some other place where its available, of course in a legal way. But it seems a few folks in China were opting for the illegitimate way out and were trying to smuggle a few units of the new iPad using special bags. As you can see in the image above, these two Chinese men used bags with double pockets to hide the device and thought that tablet will not come into the officer's notice due to its thin profile. Of course, they were apprehended.  More →

With the iPad 3 release imminent in a couple of weeks, a Portuguese blog, BlogDoiPhone, has leaked screenshots of iOS 5.1, which is supposedly going to release with the iPad 3. The leaked screenshots suggest a redesigned camera access button for the lock screen, suggesting a standstill button on the lock screen, which can be unlocked via an upward swipe. Apart from this there is also support for ‘Siri’ in Japanese. For those who don’t know the iPad 3 is expected to have a new processor, which could either feature dual or quad cores, a Retina display, and upgraded cameras. While Apple has not announced an official date for the unveil, it is expected that the company will hold an event in the first week of March. Previously, Apple showed off the iPad 2 on March 2. 2011. Report: iPad 3 back housing revealed, larger battery on the cards

Well it’s that time of the year again. You know iPad leaks time. This time around the guys at RepairLabs are reporting that the iPad 3 will have a larger battery compartment, a different logic board, possibly a different camera all in the same form factor not even a millimeter thicker. Previously it was reported that the iPad 3 could be slightly thicker, so that it could encompass for the new components, but the guys at RepairLabs don’t believe so. The RepairLabs team also mentions that the screws for the LCD panel are also different than that of the iPad 2, however they don’t have any concrete evidence to support the theory of a ‘Retina Display’. Apple planning a big media event post CES in NYC

Apple is apparently planning a big media event in New York City post CES, according to an AllThingsD report. The report also mentions that this event will most probably have nothing to do with the rumored Apple Television or even the iPad 3. The event will focus more on interactive publishing and advertising and Apple’s VP for services Eddy Cue will be involved. Previously Eddy Cue took the stage when the iPad exclusive 'The Daily' Newspaper/ Magazine was launched by Rupert Murdoch’s NewsCorp. It has also been indicated that this might be an initiative to revamp iAds, which has seen a lukewarm response from the market. Read More

Buttonless iPhone, iPad around the corner

Buttonless iPhone, iPad around the corner

Seems like Steve Jobs' dream of a phone with no buttons whatsoever is about to come true. The latest iOS 5 beta 3 firmware released to developers today adds a new 'AssistiveTouch' accessibility feature, which brings up on-screen controls for common actions associated with the home, power and volume keys. The folks at 9To5Mac have found that the controls can be summoned by swiping the screen from a user-defined corner of the display and works on both iPhone and iPad. I am not sure if we will see button-less iDevices in September but the video after the break is certainly worth checking out. More →
