Jolla, a start-up founded by ex-Nokia MeeGo members has been making waves as it intends to rekindle the magic of the MeeGo OS, by creating new hardware for it. But in this competitive environment it’s hard to fathom that a new OS will stand a chance up against the might of Android and iOS, but today if a report by FoneArena is to believed, the OS just got a mighty boost in the form of support for Android applications. Yesterday, Nokia delivered the PR 1.3 update for the Nokia N9, which runs MeeGo. Nokia had promised support for the OS for years even after it had adopted Windows Phone as its primary OS, but things look bleak as that key members of the MeeGo team have left the company after delivering the PR 1.3 update. Nokia has unveiled its next big device, the “first ever pure touch smartphone”, the N9 at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore. By “pure touch smartphone,” what the Espoo phone manufacturer means is that this is the first smartphone in the world that has no front-facing buttons. Nokia’s N9 handset has made a brief cameo via a one-minute, official-looking video clip. What do we learn from said video? Not a heck of a lot. What we do see is a 12-megapixel camera complete with Carl Zeiss optics flash before our eyes, and the iconography seen suggests that the device will be a Symbian offering complete with the Anna software update.
