TI posts a video of dual core OMAP 5, outperforms quad-core competitor

As MWC approaches, the lime light will be hogged by the slew of NVIDIA Tegra 3 devices, however one should never underestimate the omnipresence of a dark horse – the Texas Instruments OMAP 5 – which unlike the Tegra 3 will be based on ARMs latest Cortex A15 design and the SoC will be built on 28nm production platform. Right off the bat, the Tegra 3 and its quad-core processor have garnered a lot of press, however one should keep in mind it is still using the current generation ARM Cortex A9 platform rather than the A15, which we have seen before in the Qualcomm Krait and also the Texas Instruments OMAP 5. Today, Texas Instruments have posted a video of the OMAP 5, which supposedly runs on an Android 4.0 device. In the video there is a direct shoot out between the OMAP 5, which runs a dual core processor at an unknown clock speed, and a tablet running a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor. Of course TI will not specify the name of the competing chipset, but clearly the device is an Asus Transformer Prime, which runs an NVIDIA Tegra 3. More →

HTC’s MWC teaser decrypted, Hola NVIDIA Tegra 4-Plus-1!

Yesterday HTC teased us with this picture hinting "you will discover something fast on Sunday." We could not figure out what number '5' meant in the picture then but thanks to the folks at NVIDIA, we can now confirm it is indeed a smartphone running on a quad-core Tegra 3 processor. Hola, HTC One X! NVIDIA today announced it is changing the trademarking name of its variable symmetric multiprocessing architecture, which it called "ninja core" or "companion core" to "4-Plus-1" quad-core architecture. Basically, NVIDIA's Tegra 3 quad-core processor has four regular cores and one lower-power and battery-saver core for less resource hungry tasks. And guess what 4-Plus-One equals to? Yup, that same number on HTC's teaser image!
