Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications is reportedly planning to migrate its voice-oriented customers on GSM network and convert the CDMA spectrum mainly for data services. This move will be taken to free the CDMA spectrum from the voice centric customers, and instead reserve it for high speed wireless internet services to accelerate revenue generation, reports NDTV. In order to promote CDMA, Reliance has tied up with Lenovo for CDMA smartphones, and is still in talking phase with other vendors.

This is mainly planned “to reduce dependence of pure play CDMA voice customers. The customers who don’t use data, we will be migrating them to GSM spectrum and will free up spectrum for more data usage,” said Gurdeep Singh, CEO for wireless business, Reliance Communication.

On focusing on CDMA network, Singh feels that while “other CDMA players reduce their footprint or have given up spectrum. We believe we have a strong opportunity to drive dominant position in a large screen format broadband access which is through dongles route and populate more phones of CDMA on to network”.

The company revealed that non-voice services contribute 21 percent of the total revenue, and has also said to have 29.4 million mobile internet users during the March quarter. Also, GSM and Internet services when put together are contributing up to 64 percent to their wireless revenue, which is up from 57 percent recorded a year ago. The company thus wants to populate that CDMA network with dongles and CDMA smartphones.

Sony Ericsson today officially launched the W8 Android Walkman smartphone in India on RCom’s GSM and 3G networks. The two companies have followed Aircel’s and Airtel’s iPhone 4 reverse subsidy models and are providing up to 100 per cent money back spread over a period of 12 or 24 months.
