OnePlus has released OxygenOS Open Beta 3 for its flagship OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T smartphones. The update mostly addresses the controversial Clipboard app that was claimed to be sending user data including IMEI number of the device to a Chinese server.
With the release of OxygenOS Open Beta, OnePlus is doing away with the Clipboard app altogether and it says the move is based on user feedback. Last week, the Clipboard app that came bundled with OnePlus smartphones running beta software was found transmitting data to a Chinese server. The company denied the claim and said the app transmits data only on OnePlus devices running HydrogenOS in China and not the global models running OxygenOS.
Apart from the death of Clipboard app, OnePlus is also adding new features that seem to have been borrowed from Apple iPhone X. These navigation features can be turned on by disabling the navigation bar from Settings menu. This will enable gesture controls.
Once the navigation bar is disabled, the Home button is replaced by a swipe up from the middle part of the bottom of the display. In order to go back, OnePlus 5T users need to swipe up from the left or right part of the bottom while the multitasking pane can be triggered by swiping up from the middle and holding the open apps. The gestures are almost identical to the ones found on iPhone X which lacks the home button, but it’s not a mandatory feature.
The update also brings general bug fixes and improvements and it will be released via over-the-air for those already the open beta. However, if you plan to join OnePlus‘ beta program then it is advisable to read the flashing instructions first. The process of migrating back to stable builds from the beta builds will also require a full wipe of user data.
The Chinese smartphone maker is also bringing some of these features to OnePlus 5 as part of Open Beta 5. The software will again be rolled out as an OTA update and brings security patch for CPU vulnerability and general bug fixes. Here’s a quick video on how to use the new gesture controls on the OnePlus 5T!
