Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 4GB RAM vs 6GB RAM: Performance and benchmark tests compared

The Zenfone Max Pro M1 6GB RAM variant also comes with improved front and rear cameras.

Over the past couple of years, Asus had been struggling in the Indian smartphone space, especially after getting tough competition from Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo among others. But the Zenfone Max Pro M1 marked the company s road to redemption. A strong competitor to Redmi Note 5 Pro, Asus managed to pack good hardware and price it aggressively, which won some rave reviews from critics.

The Zenfone Max Pro M1 is offered in two variants 3GB RAM with 32GB storage priced at Rs 10,999, and 4GB RAM with 64GB storage priced at Rs 12,999. The company also announced a slightly more powerful variant with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage priced at Rs 14,999. The smartphone is available to purchase exclusively from Flipkart. Besides more RAM, the smartphone also comes with an improved 16-megapixel front camera, and a 16-megapixel primary camera.

With the added extras in the 6GB RAM variant, is it worth spending the extra Rs 2,000? To begin with, we ran a few synthetic benchmarks to performance different the 6GB RAM variant offers compared to the 4GB RAM variant. Here s how both smartphones fare.


We ran the AnTuTu benchmark which runs a test to check the overall performance of the smartphone. Some of these tests include memory, CPU, 2D and 3D graphics, along with the read / write speeds of the internal storage. Once the test is complete, the benchmark throws an overall performance score.

The Zenfone Max Pro M1 with 4GB RAM logged a score of 115,569 points, whereas the variant with 6GB RAM logged a score of 115,538 points. Naturally, you would expect the 6GB RAM to perform better, but there isn t any jump in the performance boost, and it isn t surprising. This is because the extra RAM is only helping with caching, giving more room for the resource hungry apps.

Geekbench 4

Next up, we ran the GeekBench 4, which is a cross-platform benchmark that measures the performance of the processor and memory. It tests the CPU by carrying out real-world tasks and running apps.

The 4GB RAM variant logged a score of 1,347 in the single-core test, and 4,918 in multi-core test. The 6GB RAM variant, on the other hand, logged a score of 1,334 in single core test and 4,871 in multi-core test. Once again, there is negligible difference between the scores.

PC Mark

This is another popular benchmark that performs real-world tests which includes computer vision, storage test like copying individual and bulk files, and more. PC Mark also has a battery test which runs a video in moderate volume in loop, along with brightness set half way. This test gives you a rough idea about the battery life and the amount of continuous video playback you can enjoy on the device.

However, for this comparison, we only performed the basic Work 2.0 test to check the CPU performance. The 4GB RAM device logged a score of 5,961, whereas the 6GB RAM device logged a score of 6,073, which is slightly higher. Some credit can be given to the extra RAM that allows performing more tasks, while still having some free memory.

3D Mark

Finally, we ran 3D Mark Sling Shot Extreme, which is a gaming benchmark that tests both, the CPU and GPU performance of the smartphone. It basically runs a default game at different frames per second (fps) for graphics performance, and then gives an overall score.

Here, the 4GB RAM variant logged a score of 934 in OpenGL ES 3.1, and 762 in Vulkan test. Similarly, in case of 6GB RAM variant, it logged a score of 932 in OpenGL ES 3.1, and 755 in Vulkan test. Once again, there isn’t much of a difference here.

In case you’re wondering which phone out of the two you need to get your hands on, then performance probably isn’t a factor. The additional RAM doesn’t do much other than ensuring apps will run slightly more smoothly. What could be the dealmaker, however, is the fact that the smartphone comes with slightly higher resolution cameras.
