In a move that was long overdue, Indian Railways has revamped its ticket booking website, IRCTC, after nearly four years or more. With the new facelift, IRCTC aims to offer users with a smooth booking experience for their travel needs.
Keeping up with the modern design, the revamped website looks clutter free, has a lot of graphics elements, and it looks visually appealing. To access the new website, you’ll have to visit – irctc.co.in/nget/ while the old website is still functional. There are some interesting additions, the interface looks cleaner, more towards Google’s Material Design language. Here’s a quick look at the new features.

IRCTC website redesign: New features
Trains and seat availability
The Indian Railways has made it easier to check for train and seat availability. On the left side on the home page, you can enter the Source and Destination, followed by date and class you want to travel in, and click on Find Trains.
You will now see the list of trains that are available on your chosen date. On the results page, sorting options for class, train type, and stations are available on the left. You can untick the boxes that are not required.
Next, at the center, you will see the train name, followed by departure and arrival time, and duration. This is represented by nice vectors, adding to the aesthetic appeal. For the available train, you can select the class and check the availability, as well as the fare.
You will see the available seats, followed by “Book Now” button. In case, there’s already a waiting list, you will see a button “CNF Probability” which I will talk in a bit. And on the right, you will see the fare for the ticket.
There are times when we look at the waitlist number and start thinking on whether or not the ticket will get confirmed. IRCTC aims to make this easier. It has deployed a new algorithm that is using its data from the past 13-years, to predict the ticket confirmation odds in terms of percentage.
For prediction, IRCTC is also using confirmation trends from the past year, during the same time period. However, to check this confirmation probability, you will have to login with your IRCTC ID. Ideally, a probability above 92 percent will be safe to book a wait listed ticket, or you can then check availability for some other train.
IRCTC has also categorized trains based on types. For instance, Shatabdi trains will show a blue bar on the side, special trains will show maroon, green color for Garib Rath, and so on. This will make it easier for you to look for the right train.
Master list and preferred banks
You can now add a master list with the name, age, identification details and more, and save it to the profile. At the time of booking tickets, you can simply add the traveler in two clicks, saving you the hassle of typing details all over again. You also get to choose your preferred back, thus making the checkout process even easier.
What’s more, on the homepage, you also get an option to check the PNR status of your ticket. I hope all these nifty additions should help in offering a better experience when using IRCTC website to book tickets.
