Lot of customers are now into gaming on laptops and seek performance that comes with high-end laptops like XPS 13: Dell’s Ray Wah

The flagship device in the line-up, the new XPS 13 is the best Dell laptop you can buy today. We get insights into the laptop’s development from the chief of Dell’s consumer products.

Dell XPS 13 main

Dell recently launched the latest version of the XPS 13 in India with prices starting from Rs 94,790. The top-of-the-line variant will set you back Rs 159,790, which puts the laptop undeniably in the premium range. The XPS 13 is the most premium Dell laptop you can buy today in India, and naturally it comes with all the features and specifications that you would expect from a flagship laptop. During the launch event, we had a chance to catch up with Ray Wah, the senior vice president and general manager of Dell s consumer and small business products segment. Wah visited Mumbai to launch the new Dell XPS 13 in India, and spoke to us about the new product, as well as Dell s strategy going forward. Wah first elaborated a bit on what he does for Dell. My division plans the product line-up for Dell, and ensures that consumers get the best products with the best innovation and quality we have to offer, in all consumer product lines including Alienware, Inspiron, Vostro and of course, XPS. His visit to India was focused on the launch of the new XPS 13, which comes less than two months after the previous generation XPS 13 was launched in India.

We chose to bring our best product to India soon after its global launch at CES 2018, even though we launched the previous generation a short while ago. We believe this helps us offer our customers the best product, and we want to give India access to the best products as soon as possible, Ray says of the short period between the launches.

We want to give India access to the best products as soon as possible

Speaking of the new Dell XPS 13, Ray chose to highlight some of the key improvements in the new XPS 13. Back in 2015, we shocked the entire industry when we launched what was then the world s smallest 13-inch laptop. We stacked the 13-inch laptop on top of a competitive 11-inch notebook, and when we opened the two, everyone was shocked that our device was the same size, but had a larger screen. The infinity edge screen is one of our key innovations, and combined with the higher-resolution 4K display and further shrinking of the bezels, the new XPS 13 makes the form factor even more compact for a laptop with a 13-inch screen. Ray also spoke about how other features such as Dell Cinema, HDR, anti-glare coating, and improved colors make this a superior viewing experience.

Another key aspect of the new laptop is the color, and materials that go into it. While the black variant of the Dell XPS 13 uses carbon fiber to ensure a light and sturdy build, Dell has gone with fiberglass. Carbon fiber is only available in black, but we understand that user preferences are leaning towards lighter colors. While we could have just pained the carbon fiber white, we chose to find an entirely different material to offer a more natural white color for the XPS 13 and opted for fiberglass. Wah further explained that if you were to strip out every thread of fiberglass in one laptop and stitch them all together, you could stretch that line about half way to the moon!

The Dell XPS 13 is of course a premium laptop that comes at a very high price, and we ve wondered many times just how popular these segments are for buyers. There s definitely strong growth in the higher price brackets for consumer laptops, says Wah. A lot of customers are now into gaming on laptops, and they seek the better performance that comes with high-end laptops. Many premium customers need laptops for every-day productivity, and they are the buyers of thin-and-light products such as the Dell XPS 13. The number one reason for a customer to replace a laptop, as per our studies, is performance. The Dell XPS 13 offers this in the form of a top-end 8th-generation Intel Core processors, and Dell s trademark performance management systems.

The Dell XPS 13 is on sale now via both online and offline channels, with prices starting at Rs 94,790 for the base core i5-powered variant, going up to Rs 159,790 for the top-end Core i7 variant with a 4K screen. It goes head-to-head with the recently launched Lenovo Yoga 920 on specifications and pricing, but offers a more compact form factor than the Lenovo option.
