Let s admit, CES 2018 was lackluster, and hardly any new smartphones got announced at the expo. But now, all eyes are on Mobile World Congress (MWC), which is set to kick-off in less than a week from now. It is one of the biggest tech expos, and usually draws crowd from across the globe. MWC 2018 starts on February 26, and goes on till March 1, and a lot of interesting product announcements are expected. The expo will see the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, Asus Zenfone 5-series, Nokia 1, and Nokia 7 Plus among others. Companies will also be live streaming the announcement on their product pages, and across social media platforms. Although MWC officially begins on February 26, smartphone brands like Huawei will be taking the wraps off its flagship smartphones a day in advance. Huawei has scheduled an event on February 25 at 2PM CET, which is 6:30PM in India.
While earlier rumors hinted that the company may announce the P11 (or P20) smartphone, the announcement looks less likely. However, instead of launching the smartphones, the company might unveil the MediaPad M5 8-inch and 10-inch display models that were recently leaked. The company is also hosting a separate event in March in Paris, and the P11 (or P20) smartphone will most likely be unveiled there.
At last year’s MWC, HMD Global resurrected the iconic Nokia brand with the launch of Nokia 3310, Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 Global variant. This year, the company is expected to unveil three or more smartphones. The event is set to take place on February 25 at 4PM CET, which is 8:30PM in India.
HMD Global is expected to take the wraps off the Nokia 1, an affordable smartphone running Android Go OS, Nokia 4 with Snapdragon 450 SoC, and the Nokia 7+ running Android One program. Rumors also hint that the company may announce the Nokia 8 Sirocco smartphone, the Nokia 8 Pro with 18:9 display, and global variant of Nokia 3310 4G running fork Android OS. Some rumors also hint at Nokia 9 with penta camera setup at the back, but what all HMD Global plans to announce at MWC remains to be seen.
After Huawei and Nokia, Samsung will be the next in line. The Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ are one of the highly anticipated smartphones of this year, and Samsung is hosting an event on February 25 at 6PM CET (10:30PM IST). The event will also be live streamed on Samsung s YouTube page.
Successors to last year s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, the new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are set to bring under-the-hood upgrades to the table. Based on what we have seen in the leaked renders, there aren t many design changes. Samsung has been touting photography aspect in the teasers and while the Galaxy S9 is set to get a single camera setup at the back, the Plus variant is set to get dual camera modules.
Both smartphones will be powered by Snapdragon 845 SoC in the US, and Exynos 8910 in India and other countries. Samsung is also expected to bring Apple iPhone-X like 3D facial recognition and Animoji feature on both smartphones. Just yesterday, the Galaxy Tab S4 was also surfaced online on GFXBench revealing key specifications and details, and the tablet is also expected to be announced at MWC 2018.
February 26, when MWC officially kicks off, Sony will be unveiling its flagship smartphones. The event is scheduled for 8:30AM CET, which is 1:00PM in India. Sony has started teasing a curved smartphone to be announced at MWC, and we will have to wait and see what the company has in store.
Leaks and rumors have hinted that the company may announce the Xperia XZ2, the Xperia XZ Pro and a compact smartphone at the event. The smartphones are expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and feature a tall display with 18:9 aspect ratio. Just yesterday, we also came across a report that Sony smartphone could get a last-minute design change, but there is no word on exactly when these changes are.
Lastly, Asus has also scheduled an event on February 27 at 7:30PM CET, which corresponds to February 28 12:00AM in India. The company has started teasing the launch of Zenfone 5-series powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets. Leaked renders of the Zenfone 5 have also surfaced hinting at an edge-to-edge display, with Apple iPhone X-like notch design, and a vertical dual-camera setup at the back.
The Zenfone 5 Live was also recently leaked with an iPhone X-like notch. It is expected to come with a Android 8.0 Oreo OS out-of-the-box, USB Type-C connectivity port and 3.5mm audio port. Asus may also announce a couple of other products, such as tablets and laptops.
Besides these, LG is also set to host an event at MWC, and likely to unveil V30 with AI camera, but there is no specific timing as of now. Rumors also hint that Motorola may announce the G6-series smartphones at MWC, and Xiaomi may take the wraps off the Mi MIX 2s, but details about the event timings are not available at the moment.
