Xiaomi today launched the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro smartphones in India. The Redmi Note 5 is the budget offering from the Chinese smartphone company, and while the Redmi Note 4 and Redmi Note 3 were the best sellers, Xiaomi would want to replicate the same success with the new smartphone too.
The Redmi Note 5 prices start from Rs 9,999, and brings incremental upgrades such as improved cameras, more RAM and storage on the base variant, and a tall 18:9 display. While the Redmi Note 3 had poor cameras, the Redmi Note 4 was slightly better, and with the Redmi Note 5, Xiaomi has tried to improve it further. But how much of an improvement are we talking about here? We compared the camera samples captured on the Redmi Note 4 and the Redmi Note 5 smartphones to find out.
Xiaomi has equipped the Redmi Note 5 with a 12-megapixel f/2.2 aperture camera, as opposed to 13-megapixel f/2.0 aperture camera on the Redmi Note 4. However, despite the drop in megapixel count and smaller aperture on the new smartphone, the larger 1.25-micron pixel sensor helps in capturing better photos, compared to a 1.12-micron pixel sensor on the Redmi Note 4.
As you can see in the below comparison shots, the Redmi Note 5 takes better and sharper photos with more details, and slightly punchier colors. Outdoor shots do look at bit warm, compared to dull and cold on the Redmi Note 4. In low-light too, the Redmi Note 5 takes slightly better photos, compared to its predecessor, which doesn’t handle light too well.
Up front, both smartphones come with a 5-megapixel snapper. However, the Redmi Note 5 now comes with a front-facing LED flash for better selfies in low-light. Outdoor selfies look better on the new smartphone, compared to the Redmi Note 4 that added a reddish tint to the skin tones. In low-light, also the Redmi Note 5 fares marginally better, but the overall quality isn’t too great.
As you can see in the above comparison photos, the Redmi Note 5 is indeed a better performer, but the difference in quality is marginal. This comes as a bit of disappointment considering the high expectations buyers have from new launches.
