Fallout 76 is the latest game that Bethesda revealed almost a month back around Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018. Considering that with each new game, the game publishers usually launch the game on a number of platforms and gaming consoles to ensure that an increasing number of gamers get the chance to play the game. One of the most essential things for this is cross-platform support in the game. This allows players on different platforms to experience the same game with their friends, family or gamers who are running the game on any other type of console. With the coming launch of Fallout 76, gamers across the globe were expecting Bethesda to include an online multiplayer mode but Todd Howard from the company clarified that the game will not come with any such mode. The interesting thing is that Fallout 76 will be the first online multiplayer game from the company. Lack of cross-platform support works against the game and the concept of online multiplayer mode. Howard added that the company would love to add the functionality but the company is unable to add that support because of Sony. According to a report by GameStar.de, Howard stated in a video interview, You cannot do cross-play in 76. We d really love that but right now we can t. He went on to add, Sony is not as helpful as everyone would like. As pointed out by CNET, there are very few game developers that have named Sony as the primary reason that they can t add cross-platform play to their games.
However, Bethesda was not the first one to name the real problem. Back in 2016, Jeremy Dunham, the VP for Rocket League named Sony as the culprit behind the lack of cross-platform play in Rocket League. After Rocket League, Fortnite also hinted at the same when gamers could not log into Nintendo Switch version of the game for players who had linked their Epic Games accounts to PS4 in the past. Sony issued a response to the backlash from the gamers adding that “looking at a lot of the possibilities” but it did not make any promises.
