The battle-royale genre of gaming is lit right now and the Rivalry between Epic s Fortnite and its rival Bluehole s PlayerUnknown s Battlegrounds has reached a new high. Fortnite has been doing a great job at catching up with PUBG in the past few months. But the tables seem to have turned now as Fortnite has outdone PUBG and posted a revenue of $126 million in the month of February compared to the $103 million by the latter. Also Read - Beware! Fortnite is a free to play game and its revenue comes from the ingame purchases of cosmetic items like, avatars, clothes, funny animations and skins. Though these do not affect the gameplay at all, it is a great way to stand out in a crowd of people, and it s what makes the game fun. PUBG in comparison, also has ingame purchases for cosmetic items like clothes, but the majority of its revenue came from the initial price of the game which is set to $30 (Rs 1000 in India). This just goes to show that the developer of PUBG hasn t been able to monetize the game as successfully as Fortnite.
But both the games have recently launched its mobile versions which have become major hits instantaneously. While PUBG Mobile has launched on both iOS and Android, Fortnite for the time being is an invite-only option for iOS users. Both the games are free to play, and here PUBG has garnered a much bigger download ratio than Fortnite. But Fortnite still has room to grow due to the fact that it is a limited release, and offers cross-platform play while PUBG does not.
Despite the limited release, Fortnite developers report that it has earned close to $1.5 million more than PUBG on its mobile platform.
Though Fortnite has been called a rip off as it borrowed quite a few ideas from PUBG, it remains a friendlier game. The cartoonish graphics make it a less serious involvement and more fun game than PUBG. Another issue that Bluehole has been facing since inception is cheaters that the company is spending a lot of resources to keep a check on.
