Gamescom 2018: Nvidia launches RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 GPUs powered by real-time Ray Tracing technology

The new GPUs will be using real-time Ray Tracing technology that has majorly been used in making visual effects in the film industry.

Update: NVIDIA has revealed India price of RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 GPU at Rs 102,500, Rs 68,500 and Rs 51,200 respectively.

Nvidia has finally launched its latest generation of GPUs from the new RTX 2000 series for gamers. The new RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 are now up for pre-orders from the GPU manufacturer. The GPUs were launched at the pre-Gamescom 2018 event at Cologne, Germany.

The new cards that use the latest Turing technology are successors to the previous Pascal generation top-end cards, the GTX 1080Ti, GTX 1080 and GTX 1070. Nvidia usually waits a while before launching the Ti versions of its GPUs, but this time around the company has launched the 2080 Ti alongside the normal version.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, announced during the presentation that the RTX 2070 will have a starting price of $499, RTX 2080 at $699, and RTX 2080 Ti at $999. According to Nvidia, these are the retail prices for the third-party manufacturer cards. But the Founders Edition of the cards are not really as cheap.

The FE version of GTX 2080 Ti will cost $1,199, GTX 2080 will cost $799, and GTX 2070 will cost $599. The GTX 2080 Ti and GTX 2080 are up for pre-orders right now, and will be available on September 20. There is no estimated date for the launch of the GTX 2070.

The new RTX GPUs from Nvidia are the first consumer grade GPUs to come with the company’s newest Turing architecture. Earlier this month, Nvidia had launched its new Quadro line of GPUs at SIGGRAPH Computer Conference, which were the first GPUs from the company to sport the Turing architecture. While the GeForce series is geared towards gaming, the Quadro lineup from Nvidia is made for professional applications.

The new RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 come with in-built real-time ray-tracing technology support. This technology creates photo-realistic graphics using a new rendering and lighting technique. Game developers are all set to adopt this technology this year. The change in the naming of the cards from GTX to RTX refers to the use of real time ray-tracing technology in the new GPUs , which was announced at Game Developer Conference 2018 in March.

Ray-tracing technology, up until now, has only been used in creating visual effects in the film industry. This is largely because of the extreme computational needs resulting in extremely costly hardware, making it impractical for gaming. Besides the real-time Ray Tracing technology, the new RTX GPUs also incorporate the use of shaders and Artificial Intelligence. Nvidia also announced a new Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), which is a technology that applies deep learning and AI to rendering techniques using millions of images to learn how to treat a pixel, resulting in crisp, smooth edges on rendered objects in games.

As for the performance, Nvidia says that the new Turing architecture GPUs have six times higher performance than the previous generation Pascal architecture GPUs. And gamers will be able to play new and upcoming games at 4K resolution with HDR enabled at over 60 frames per second.

The base variant, which is the RTX 2070 is capable of producing 8 Teraflops of power along with 6 Gigarays per second, this means it can compute 45 trillion simultaneous RTX operations. All the new GPUs will feature at least 8GB GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus, and will have 185W TDP rating.

There were quite a few demos at the presentation that show the difference between the performance of the Pascal architecture GPUs and the Turing ones. The “Project Sol” demo that was made by Nvidia itself used a Quadro RTX 6000 GPU.

Besides those, we witnessed games like Battlefield V that used RTX-based reflections, while Metro Exodus was used as an example for RTX-based lighting, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider showcased the use of RTX-based shadows.
