The gaming industry is waiting for the next generation of consoles from giants including Sony, and Microsoft, as it has been about five years since the launch of the last generation of gaming consoles. Though Sony launched its’ PlayStation 4 Pro and Microsoft launched its Xbox One X almost one and two years back respectively. But both the consoles are considered hardware revisions to the original PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One instead of being a separate hardware generation.
Past rumors have pointed out that both the companies are working behind the scenes on the next generation but the launches are still well over a year away, at the very least. Amidst all the anticipation, reports emerged on the internet claiming that a new platform by the code-name “Erebus” popped up in the latest release of the Unreal Engine 4. According to a report by GearNuke, this code name was discovered by a user ‘Gemusepizza’ on ResetEra in the Unreal Engine 4 supported platform list. The report pointed out that Erebus was being referred to as “TST2” inside the engine.

The code name was being used along with the likes of PS4 and Xbox One for “PartyPlatforms” where the engine would check if a game supports cross-play between platforms. The report stated that this hinted that Erebus could come with cross-play support with the current generation of platforms. The report pointed out that the reason Erebus could be the PS5 was that according to Wikipedia, Erebus is the Greek god of Darkness and he is identified “as one of the first five beings in existence.”
For context, the code name of the PS4 was Orbis, and PSVR was Morpheus aligning Erebus with the Sony codename convention. However, just hours after the initial reports popped up on the internet, a developer working with Epic Games took to Twitter to confirm that Erebus refers to the codename that the company had given to Nintendo Switch version of its popular Battle Royale game Fortnite before the announcement.
