  • These mechanical triggers are entirely devoid of electronics, and fix onto your smartphone easily.

  • Available online for less than Rs 300, it's a simple tool that will help improve your game.

If you’re an avid player of either of the two popular battle royale games on mobile phones right now, you know how challenging these games can be. Whether you play PUBG Mobile or Fortnite Battle Royale, whether you’re on iOS or Android, mastering the game is a high priority for anyone currently hooked onto the games. Fortunately, we now have a simple tool that can go a long way towards improving your game.

A quick look on major e-commerce portals will find various ‘triggers’ or controllers, designed especially for PUBG Mobile and Fortnite on smartphones. These simple contraptions are entirely mechanical and do not have any electronics built in, which adds to the appeal. Fix these onto your smartphone and you’ll be able to improve your game. Here’s how.

Step One: Fix it on

The controllers that I purchased were found on Amazon India and cost me Rs 289. The package arrived in a day (thanks to Amazon Prime) and contained a tiny plastic box with four pieces inside: two trigger mechanisms and two screw-on adjusters. The mechanism and adjusters are largely made of plastic, with hints of metal. Simply attach the screw-on adjuster, clip it to the side of your smartphone (iOS or Android, it doesn’t matter), and adjust the screw to tighten the hold.

The actual tip that makes contact with your phone’s screen is soft plastic, with the mechanism underneath. While I was initially worried that these would damage the glass on either side of my OnePlus 6, I’m happy to report that it has done no harm to the device at all even with regular use. The mechanism is attached to a metal trigger at the bottom; pushing the trigger mimics a finger tap on the screen where it makes contact. You can choose to attach one or both of the triggers; I personally preferred using just the one trigger on the left, leaving my right hand to hold the phone steady and aim with my thumb on screen.

Step Two: Adjust the controls

Once you have the trigger attached, the next step is to adjust the controls in-game. Head on over to the settings, adjust the on-screen game controls to move the ‘fire’ button to the side of the phone where the trigger is attached. You may have to remove the trigger and reattach it according to where you’ve positioned the fire button. Once this is done, test its response. If you’ve done it right, pushing the trigger button will cause a screen ‘tap’ on the fire button, thereby switching firing or attacking to the external mechanical button.

Step Three: Win Chicken Dinner

Now that you’ve got everything in place, start your game! The advantage of the triggers are visible straight away. Earlier, you would have to use your two thumbs to move and aim, lifting your thumb off either side to tap the fire buttons. Now that the fire function is being handled by your index fingers, you can leave your thumbs to do the moving and aiming, while simultaneously firing and holding a firm grip on your smartphone. Indeed, the first game I played with the triggers saw a jump in my game, and it will likely do the same for you.

Head on over to Amazon India or Flipkart, where you’ll see plenty of similar products listed in various shapes, sizes and prices, starting from under Rs 200. The mechanical nature of these means that this will work on practically every smartphone available today, easily attaching and functioning as advertised.
