Reliance Jio has been making news and foraying into new waters since its inception in 2016. After acquiring a strong foothold in the telecom sector, it has forayed into the broadband market as well. And now it seems, Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio is about to try their hand eSports which is almost an untouched arena in India.
Though there has been no official announcement yet, Anurag Khurana, who is the ex-boss at Riot Games India seems to have been hired by Reliance Jio to head their eSports division. This news originates from the fact that Anurag Khurana has changed his Linkedin profile to say “Head of esports at Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited”.
Khurana on his part has been a part of Paradox Studios and worked on BattleDust: The Championship which happens to be one of India’s first PC games. He has even worked with RedOctane, the company that developed Guitar Hero.
This venture into eSports is a strategic move by Reliance Jio which corresponds with its venture into the broadband business. This seems like an opportunity that the company capitalized on, and it makes sense since eSports is grossly underrepresented in India.

It remains to be seen how Reliance Jio will be approaching the eSports scene in India where games like PUBG Mobile and Clash Royale dominate the mobile arena or go with the more popular options of Dota 2 and Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Whichever is the case, the sheer reach of Reliance Jio will be a boost to the gaming scene in India.
