Though you may not have heard any chatter about a possible Nintendo Switch 2 in the recent times, but apparently dataminers seem to have found some evidence which may be curious. Dataminers seem to have found some information in the latest firmware update which points to a mid-cycle hardware update for the Nintendo Switch.

According to recent evidence, a new folder has been discovered in the 5.0 firmware upgrade which mentions a new hardware configuration codenamed “Makiro”.

Switchbrew dataminers have found evidence that the hardware update could include an update of the Tegra 210 SoC to a Tegra 214 SoC. A possible reason for this could be the fact that the Tegra 210 SoC is more vulnerable to hacking, and the newer processor would offer some improvements. Besides the processor, other data found suggests that Nintendo may be upgrading the RAM from 4GB to 8GB.

After this was revealed in the Restera post, researcher Mike Heskin has suggested we take this piece of news with a pinch of salt. He adds that this could just be a hardware update for the developers and not the customers. To corroborate this theory, IGN has added that the current developer model has 64GB RAM while the public have the 32GB model.

But if a recent Wall Street Journal report is to be believed, Nintendo does not plan to launch any new consoles this year and this may be a silent update for the developers, which is typical. And according to a report last month, Nintendo has apparently said that it does not intend to introduce a new console for the next five years at least.

And this was given ground by Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the Mario series and an investor, who said, “When you think about what can be done with the Nintendo Switch as a device that can be taken on the go and that every person has in their hands to play, you realise it has many features not available on any other hardware to date.”

So we just have to wait and see if this is a legitimate new version of the Switch.
