A year ago, Google launched the cashless payment app ‘Google Tez’ in India. The app allows users to transfer funds using a UPI address, mobile number, account number, or QR code. Recently, Google rebranded the app, and it is now called Google Pay. The app has over 50 million downloads since launch. If you haven’t used the app yet, and want to give it try, here’s a guide to help you get started with.
Google Pay: Getting started
To begin with, you need to install the app from the Play Store. It roughly weighs under 10MB in size, with the install size coming to about 30MB. After installation, you will be asked to choose the app language. There is support for 8 languages – English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu.
1. Once you have installed the app, enter your phone number.
2. Grant the necessary permission when prompted to send and receive SMS, access contacts, and location. To do this, tap on ‘allow.’
3. When prompted to add an account, sign in with your Google account. You can also have additional Google accounts if you wish to add.
4. You will receive an OTP on your phone and your number will get verified.
5. Choose between a screen lock or Google Pin to ensure your account stays safe.
If you choose to go with Google Pin, you will have to set a 4-digit code, and you will need to be connected to the internet for verification of the same. If you choose to go with screen lock pattern, you will be able to use the existing lock screen security that you use – fingerprint, iris, face unlock, password, or pattern. Once you are done with this, the setup will be complete.
Google Pay: Adding your bank account
Now, to use Google Pay, you need to add your bank account. But before that, you also need to ensure that your bank account is linked to your phone number, Aadhaar and PAN, else the app will not be able to fetch the details.
If the above conditions are met, tap on the three dots on the top left on the app home screen. Next, tap on settings. Here, you will see your profile with options such as your phone number, privacy, security and more. You will also see an option called “bank account,” tap on that.
If one of your bank accounts are already associated with other UPI account, it will show up on this page – just tap on that and tap on restore. Else, tap on “add bank account.”
Select your bank from the list of banks. The app will then send an SMS for verification, and then add the bank account. Do ensure that you have the same SIM card inserted that is linked with your bank account.
Adding another bank account
If you, like me, have more than one bank accounts (personal and salary account), and you want to add the other account, it is possible to do so.
Head over to settings, tap on bank accounts, and tap on add bank account.
Select your bank from the list, after which the app will send a verification message.
Once the details are fetched, it will ask you to enter your UPI Pin linked to this bank account, or give you can option to create one. Once that is done, your other bank account will be added.
Google Pay: Setting a primary bank account
Now that you have added two or more bank accounts, you can choose a primary bank account of your choice. So, every time when you send or receive money, it will be debited or credited to this particular bank account. To do so, head over to Settings > Bank Accounts > Tap on the one you want to choose as primary > Tap on “Set as primary account.”
Google Pay: Sending and receiving money
Once all the setup is complete, sending money is very simple. On the bottom half of the home screen, you will see the contacts that are already there on Google Pay. You can tap on the contact – you can chat with the contact, like you do in other instant messaging apps, and there are two other options called Pay and Request.
Tap on “Pay” followed by the amount and a note (to specify what it is for), followed by proceed to pay. On the next screen, you will be asked to enter the UPI PIN, which, once verified, the amount will be transferred to the recipient account.
The above process was in case someone is already on the app. But, you can send payments to other users like you do with internet banking. Tap on the “New” icon with rupee symbol on the home screen, followed by the mode – account number (where you need to enter the recipient account number and IFSC code), or you can pay using UPI ID or scan a QR code or pay using Google Pay mobile number.
Now, in case you want to request money from someone, the user has to be on Google Pay. Tap on new and find the user from the list. Next, in the chat window, tap on request, enter the amount followed by note and tap on request, which will send a notification to the user. The recipient just needs to accept that, enter the PIN number, and the amount will be transferred to your account.
Google Pay: Utility bill payments
Google also added the option for utility bill payments where you can pay your DTH bills, broadband, electricity, gas and insurance bills. Just tap on the “New” icon on the home screen, then choose where you want to pay (landline bill, for instance). Next, enter telephone number, account number and a nick name, and tap on next button at the bottom.
Your account details will be fetched, and then tap on link account at the bottom. If any bill is presented by the biller, it will show up on the screen, you can pay it right within the window. All the billers that you add will also appear on the home screen, at the bottom half, so you can directly make payments from there.
Google Pay: Cashback and rewards
Lastly, for using Google Pay, you also get rewards in the form of cashbacks. Whether you are making an electricity bill payment, DTH bill payment, sending money to your friends or family, you may be eligible to get a cashback, the amount will vary from time to time.
Over the course of time, Google Pay rewards you with cashback for utility bill payments, which is instantly credited to the linked bank account.
