Earlier this week, OnePlus rolled out an update for its latest flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 6, which brought the May security patch and bug fixes. But the company also quietly disabled the Always-On display. In a statement, the OnePlus highlighted “battery saving concerns” as a reason for disabling the feature.

As of now, there is no word on when the feature will be back. But if you can’t wait for OnePlus to officially rollout the feature again, there is a way you to get “Always-On” feature right away. And you can get it not only on the OnePlus 6, but also on the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. Let’s see how to do it.

How to get ‘Always-On’ display on OnePlus 6, 5, and 5T

Before you get too excited, let me warn you, the procedure requires a bit of tinkering. To begin with, you will need to unlock the bootloader, install custom recovery and root your OnePlus smartphone.

Step One

Head over to XDA Developers forum page of your respective device – OnePlus 6, OnePlus 5T or OnePlus 5.

Step Two

Under the ROMs, Kernels and Recoveries section, you will find the procedure on how to root your OnePlus device, and install custom recovery.

Step Three

Once you have root access and custom recovery installed, download Magisk application manager from this link (https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.topjohnwu.magisk), and install it.

Step Four

Next, head over to https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/themes/ambient-display-t3795336, and download the attached .ZIP file, and install it using Magisk manager.

Step Five-

Once the installation is complete, reboot your OnePlus 6, 5T or 5, and you will be able to find the “always-on display” feature under Settings > Display.

The always-on display is a good addition as it lets you easily glance over the phone’s display to check notifications, weather, date and time. And because AMOLED displays only light up minimal amount of pixels, it does not consume much of your smartphone’s battery. For more such tips, follow our dedicated how to section.

Disclaimer: Any mistake while rooting your OnePlus device could potentially brick it permanently. Proceed with caution, and that too only if you are a pro user who often flashes custom ROMs.
