iOS 11.3: How to check battery health and disable throttling

With iOS 11.3, Apple has introduced battery health feature that lets you control your iOS device's performance. Here's how it works.

apple battery health feature

Earlier this year in January, Apple admitted to throttling the speed of older iPhones to avoid unexpected shutdowns that are caused due to degrading battery life. After backlash from users and a number of class lawsuits, Apple promised to issue software update that will not only offer information about battery health, but also allow users to disable performance throttling. Now, Apple has started rolling out iOS 11.3 update, which allows you to disable performance throttling to restore your iPhone s peak performance. The iOS 11.3 update comes with Battery Health beta that helps you monitor and control performance management on your iPhone. While the feature is present on all iPhones, you will be able to control performance of older devices, such as the iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and the iPhone 7. Of course, the Plus variants of these smartphones are also included. Also Read - Apple iPhone 12 price: You may get it at this cost, thanks to OLED display and 5G connectivity

iOS 11.3 improves this performance management feature by periodically assessing the level of performance management necessary to avoid unexpected shutdowns. If the battery health is able to support the observed peak power requirements, the amount of performance management will be lowered. If an unexpected shutdown occurs again, then performance management will increase. This assessment is ongoing, allowing more adaptive performance management, Apple wrote on the support page.

What is the maximum capacity of a battery?

The maximum battery capacity is relative to when it was new. When first activated, batteries start at 100 percent, and the capacity lowers as it chemically ages. In usual cases, a battery is designed to retain up to 80 percent of its original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles.

So how does Apple define peak performance capability ?

The ability of your iPhone s battery to supply adequate charge even for highly demanding tasks is defined as peak performance capability. When your iPhone shows 100 percent in Battery Health beta, it means the battery supports normal peak performance. When you see 95 percent in the Battery Health section, it means the iPhone has experienced an unexpected shutdown and battery was unable to deliver peak performance. In such a case, performance management gets applied.

When you see 79 percent or less it means that your battery health is significantly degraded. In such cases, replacing the battery can restore full performance. Lastly, if the battery health shows unknown it means iPhone is unable to determine the health, and you ll need to replace the battery.

How to disable performance management on iPhones

Step One

Ensure that your iPhone is updated to iOS 11.3.

Step Two

Tap on Settings and then tap on Battery. Here you will find Battery Percentage toggle, Low Power Mode, and a third option called Battery Health beta.

Step Three

Tap on Battery Health. Now, if your battery capacity is below 95 percent, you will see an option called Disable in the Peak Performance Capability section. Tapping on Disable will turn off performance throttling.

With these steps, you can restore the peak speed of your iPhone. But in scenarios where the battery capacity falls below 79 percent, it is recommended to get the battery replaced.
