Xiaomi Redmi 5A has become an indisputable champion in the entry-level smartphone segment. According to IDC, the Redmi 5A was the best-selling smartphone during the second quarter of 2018, and one out of every 10 smartphone sold in the country was a Redmi 5A. The success of Redmi 5A can be owed to its entry-level price, and lack of competition in the segment.
Now, Amazon India-backed 10.or and Transsion Holdings’ Infinix have announced their challengers to Redmi 5A. The Seattle-based e-commerce giant launched 10.or D today as part of its “Crafted for Amazon” initiative. The smartphone comes just weeks after the launch of Infinix Smart 2, which is exclusive to Flipkart. Here is a look at how these three devices compare against each other.
Design and Display
Xiaomi Redmi 5A was launched in December last year, and it now seems outdated in terms of design. The smartphone lacks modern design like thin bezels surrounding the display. Both the 10.or D and Infinix Smart 2 feature thinner bezels around the display.
All the three devices feature polycarbonate back casing with finish that seems similar to that of metal. The 10.or D2 and Infinix Smart 2 have clear edge here thanks to their modern design packing a larger display in a smaller form factor.
The 10.or D2 features and Infinix Smart 2 feature a larger 5.45-inch display with HD+ resolution of 1440×720 pixels and 18:9 aspect ratio. The Redmi 5A, on the other hand, has a 5.2-inch display with HD resolution of 1280×720 pixels. If you want a larger screen without having to buy a larger phone then both 10.or D2 and Infinix Smart 2 are a compact device with big display.
In terms of specifications, the 10.or D2 is powered by quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset. The mobile platform is the same as the one used on Xiaomi’s Redmi 5A, while Infinix has equipped the Smart 2 with MediaTek MT6739 SoC.
All three smartphones come in two storage variants: a base variant with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, and a higher model with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. These three devices also offer similar battery with the 10.or D2 packing a larger 3,200mAh battery, while Smart 2 and Redmi 5A have a 3,050 and 3,000mAh battery respectively. The 10.or D2 has another edge with stock Android 8.1 Oreo, which makes it highly likely to get Android 9 Pie update. The Redmi 5A runs Nougat with update to Oreo while the Smart 2 runs XOS based on Android Oreo.
All the three devices feature a 13-megapixel main camera that will produce acceptable results in bright and well-lit conditions. However, these cameras tend to struggle a lot in low-light scenario. At the front, the Redmi 5A and 10.or D2 sport a 5-megapixel camera, while the Infinix Smart 2 gets higher resolution 8-megapixel sensor. The Infinix Smart 2 also uses its front camera for facial recognition, which the other two devices lack at this moment.
Xiaomi Redmi 5A was launched at a starting price of Rs 5,999 for the base model with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. The variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage is priced at Rs 6,999. The company has maintained that price since its launch nearly eight months ago.
Infinix is offering the Smart 2 with better design and identical specifications at the same price. The Infinix Smart is priced at Rs 5,999 for the 2GB RAM variant while the model with 3GB RAM is priced at Rs 6,999. The 10.or D2 is a bit more expensive with the 2GB RAM variant priced at Rs 6,999 and 3GB RAM variant priced at Rs 7,999. Amazon India is offering two years warranty on this smartphone to its Prime subscribers.
