5 top new features of Microsoft Windows 10

Windows 10 - latest

Microsoft took to the stage last night at a special event to talk about Windows 10, its forthcoming operating system that runs across devices. First introduced in September last year, the company showcased a number of new features of Windows 10 for desktop, in addition to showing its variant for mobile and gaming consoles. Here’s are the five most interesting thing about Windows 10.

Cortana for desktop

Cortana on Desktop

Microsoft is bringing the personal digital voice assistant Cortana, which was previously exclusively available on Windows Phone, to the desktop platform. Just like on the phone, Cortana learns your preferences to provide relevant recommendations. Cortana has deep integration with all the other Windows services. Using it, users can get fast access to information and check reminders. One can ask her to open an email, and check the game score, and weather information among other things.

Continuum Mode

Continuum Mode is designed to help people who are using 2-in-1 computers. The service enables a user to quickly switch between desktop and tablet modes. For instance, as a user plugs out the keyboard/mouse from a hybrid computer, the device automatically detects the transition and shows off an option for on-screen keyboard, making the device quickly start working like a tablet.

Spartan web-browser

The company also showed off its latest web-browser at the event. Codenamed Project Spartan, the web-browser features myriads of handy features with a refreshing interface. Spartan comes with integration with Cortana, which enables it to display flight, weather and several other information right on the web-browser. In addition, the browser also lets one annotate by keyboard or pen directly on the web page and then easily share with friends. There is also a reading view, which offers distraction free layout for a great reading experience for web articles and offline.

Xbox games on Windows 10

Xbox One on Windows 10

Microsoft has been long flaked for not improving the gaming experience on Windows computers. The Xbox gaming console maker announced last night that users will now be able to use their Windows 10-powered laptops and PCs to play any Xbox title. There is a catch though, the operating system doesn’t support the Xbox One titles natively but mirrors the games on the device. It is still a pretty handy feature. Players will also be able to capture, edit, and share their gaming moments with Game DVR, and play new games with friends across devices. For developers, Microsoft says that DirectX 12 in Windows 10 will provide better efficiency and graphics capability, and offer speedy performance.

It’s free!

What came as a total surprise at the event was the announcement that Windows 10 will be made available for free to not only Windows 8 (and 8.1) users, but also Windows 7 users. It’s a smart move by the company which wants more people to use the latest operating system version. According to latest stats from marketing analytics Net Applications, Windows 7 has 55% of the desktop market share.
