After Apple officially announced that the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will be launched in India on November 1, there have been many rumors around the prices of the two new iPhones in India. And understandably so. A leading newspaper today published what it claims to be the prices of the new iPhones in India, which has resulted in a deluge of tweets, mails, text messages and every possible means of communication asking for our take on the news. First of all, the prices are incorrect and are not official. They deduced these numbers by simple conversions of the prices of the unsubsidized iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C in the US and that too before local taxes there. The calculation does not take into account import duties, currency hedging, local Indian taxes and some other factors at play, so rest assured that the iPhone 5C won’t be priced at Rs 34,700 and the iPhone 5S at Rs 41,000. Now coming to the actual prices. Do we have them? The short answer is no. From what we hear, Apple India is still working with Cupertino to freeze on the pricing. But what we can tell you at this point of time is that the iPhone 5S unlikely to carry the same price tag as the iPhone 5 at its launch last year (Rs 45,500) leave aside it being cheaper than that. The idea here is to set expectations right rather than everyone getting “disappointed” later.
