Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition cheaper variant

Xiaomi launched the Mi 8 Explorer Edition alongside, the Mi 8 and the Mi 8 SE smartphones in May. However, this particular model stands out from that lot, mostly because it features a 3D face recognition system and an in-display fingerprint sensor. Credit can also be given to its translucent back, which now we know displays a fake circuit board at the back.

Regardless of all of that, it cannot be argued that the smartphone is still one of the expensive offerings from Xiaomi being priced at RMB 3,799 (approximately Rs 38,000). While that might be out of budget for a good chunk of the market, Xiaomi now is reported to be working on what looks like an affordable variant of the Mi 8 Explorer Edition.

A recently spotted TENAA listing showcases a Xiaomi smartphone that features the same translucent back as the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer edition along with the same dimensions. However, one of the key difference in the design is a smaller notch that can be seen carrying only the earpiece and the selfie camera. This leads us to believe that Xiaomi could be omitting the 3D face scanner on this variant in order to reduce the price of the smartphone. That said, it might still carry the in-display fingerprint sensor.

The listing doesn’t reveal the CPU running on the device but does mention it to feature clock speeds of 2.8GHz. The smartphone will also be available in three RAM and storage configurations that include, 4GB/6GB/8GB and 64GB/128GB/256GB, respectively.

The smartphone is also touted to come with the same 6.12-inch full HD+ AMOLED screen featured on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition. Even the camera setup seems to be the same, with dual 12-megapixel sensors running alongside at the back and a 20-megapixel camera featured at the front. However, the smartphone comes with a smaller 2,900mAh battery. Lastly, it is expected to run on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system.
