Even though Bharti Airtel becomes the first operator to roll out MNP, it comes after much delay. Pan-India MNP was set for March deadline, but operators faced many technical hiccups. DoT has now extended the deadline till July after the telecom industry body COAI sought extension as telecom operators needed 8 weeks to make some technical changes to their networks due to changes in national numbering plan (NNP). Under the full MNP regime, Airtel subscribers will now be able to switch to the network of either the same or any other telecom operator in a different state while retaining the same mobile number. The company even promises that the porting request will be processed within 24 hours. To ease the transition process further, Airtel also provides free incoming calls on roaming till the porting is not done. Furthermore, no changes in prepaid balance or postpaid bill will be made, and the amount will be carry forwarded.
With our complete readiness to launch National Mobile Number Portability, we aim to empower customers enabling them to retain this identity as they move across anywhere in the country, Ajai Puri, Director Market Operations said. To facilitate a seamless transition we will also allow our customers to enjoy free incoming on roaming while their number portability request is being processed.
Airtel informs that users call avail full MNP services in all retail outlets and service centers from tomorrow. To ensure the arrival of full MNP on all operators soon, DoT even amended NNP in May and asked telecom operators to allow their subscribers to dial STD numbers without any ‘0’ or ‘+91’ prefix.
