Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus went on sale in India just last week, and prices start at Rs 60,000 for the iPhone 7 32GB variant. Naturally, many richie-rich Apple fans pre-booked the phone and made sure they had it with them on the first day of release. But there have been many, like me, who were extremely tempted by the new iPhone, but were on a constant lookout for a deal that makes the purchase a wee bit feasible. And amid all the treasure hunt for a good offer on the iPhone 7, Airtel announced an unbelievable deal, wherein you could get an iPhone 7 for just Rs 19,990. As improbable as it sounds, it is actually true, however there is a ‘big’ catch. If you have been banking on the news of the new Airtel offer to get your new iPhone, here is why you probably need to go easy on your excitement. To clear the air around the offer, we did a little research following which BGR India learnt how this offer works. So, yes, Airtel is offering the iPhone for life plan, which allows you to purchase the 32GB variant of the iPhones for a down payment of Rs 19,990. However, this is an enterprise offer , which means, that there are a few enterprises in the country who have teamed up with Airtel, and the employees of these enterprises are being offered this deal. Also, this is only applicable for the enterprises that are based out of Karnataka and Noida. Airtel refused to disclose the enterprises that are covered under the offer.
Having said that, even if you fall under the enterprise offer, you must consider all the ins and outs of the offer before you go for the deal. So, according to Airtel, the 32GB base variant of iPhone 7 is priced at Rs 59,998, but as a part of the deal you only need to pay Rs 19,990 as an initial down payment. For the offer, Airtel has tied up with Bajaj Finance, under which the iPhone will be available with zero percent interest scheme. Also, most importantly, to be eligible for the offer you must be eligible for loan which needs you to produce your two months’ salary slip. You also signup for Electronic Clearance Service, wherein you authorize BFL to deduct money from your account as per the plan.
You will then need to choose between three Airtel plans priced at Rs 1,999, Rs 2,499 and Rs 2,999 per month. Benefits of these plans include 5GB of 3G/4G data along with unlimited local + STD calling, even on national roaming for Rs 1,999. The Rs 2,499 plan gives you 10GB of 3G/4G data, whereas the Rs 2,999 plan gives you 15GB of 3G/4G data per month. You also get free access to Wynk music and movies under these plans.
For the 128GB and 256GB iPhone 7, you will have to pay Rs 29,490 and Rs 35,990 respectively. In the case of the iPhone 7 Plus, the down payment for 32GB variant is Rs 30,792, whereas the 128GB and 256GB will set you back by Rs 37,292 and Rs 43,792 respectively. After the completion of one year, you can either return the iPhone 7 or purchase it by making balloon payment of Rs 24,000. Now, the balloon payment is what you must pay a little attention to. According to the deal, after 12 months, you will have get the opportunity to exchange your iPhone 7 with the latest iPhone in the stores. However, in case you plan on keeping the current iPhone with you, there is some math you would need to do. To opt out after 12 months, you would need to pay Bajaj Alliance, what it calls the “balloon payment” of Rs 24,000 for the base variant and more for others. In other words, after a year you would have paid Rs 19,990 down payment, Rs 27,600 for the data plan, and the balloon payment of Rs 24,000. This comes up to a total of Rs 71,590.
What you also need to consider under the plan is the damage cover. So, in case you damage or lose your iPhone during the Plan Period, you will still need to pay the tariffs for the plan for the rest of the decided period. Airtel also has Terms and Condition applied to issuing a new iPhone after the one year of contract period. According to the terms, your device should have no physical damage or liquid damage, and should basically be as good as new. Airtel considers an iPhone with “cracked screen/casings, scratches, chips and dents, paint peeling, liquid damage, LCD damage/bleeding and/or swollen battery” as damaged. If your iPhone has any of these issues, then Airtel won’t replace your iPhone. Of course, for damages that are covered under the warranty, you can definitely get the device serviced for any issues under the warranty terms.
Once you accept a tariff plan under the offer, there are some more conditions that apply to your connection. For example, you can no longer apply for Mobile Number Portability (MNP), you cannot transfer the ownership of the number, or migrate from postpaid to a prepaid plan. Now, for people like you and I, who are not covered under the enterprise plan , the only offer we get, is the 10GB plan, under which iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus users get additional 10GB internet data every month, and the offer is valid for 12 months, and for all customer across the country. An Airtel spokesperson also clarified, “We understand that there is some confusion regarding two separate offers from Airtel on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus. There is a special 10GB per month free additional data offer with any Airtel Infinity plan with iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus. The offer is open for all customers and is very much active. There is also a device lease plan, which is being piloted for employees of select enterprise customers, and this offer is also very much active. In the interest of customers and to avoid any further confusion, relevant changes are being made to the website. These will reflect shortly.”
Besides Airtel, Reliance Jio is also providing an enticing deal on the new iPhones. Along with a home delivery of the iPhones, it is offering a free annual plan worth Rs 18,000 to buyers, which is valid till December 31, 2017. The offer is applicable on both iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Additionally, the iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are on offer as well. Under this offer users get unlimited local and STD voice calls, unlimited SMS, 20GB 4G data per month, night unlimited high-speed data (2:00AM to 5:00AM) and 40GB of Wi-Fi data on JioNet Wi-Fi data.
