An Airtel customer needs to have an IRCTC and Airtel Money account to be able to avail this service. The user will also have to update the IRCTC profile with the Airtel Money account number to sync the services. One can then dial *400# to start the booking procedure. The booking system is completely USSD-based and thus doesn t use any Internet data or charge users for a SMS. After the tickets have been booked, IRCTC will send a SMS as a confirmation that the ticket has been booked. The same SMS is also considered as a proof of a ticket and can be shown to the TC in the train.
IRCTC also launched its own SMS-based ticket booking system, where feature phone users in India too could book tickets without having to go to a ticket counter.
