Airtel revises Rs 199 prepaid to offer 1.4GB 4G data, unlimited calling

As part of the revised Rs 199 plan by Airtel, users get a total of 39.2GB data for a period of 28 days.

The battle between the network operators continues to intensify with Airtel updating its Rs 199 prepaid subscription plan to take on Reliance Jio. As part of the new plan, Airtel prepaid users can benefit from 1.4GB of 3G/4G daily data for a period of 28 days. The revised plan follows Jio’s Rs 198 plan announcement under which users get 2GB/day data quota for the same duration.

The new Rs 199 prepaid plan by Airtel offers unlimited calling and free SMS benefits as well. With the 1.4GB per day data quota, Airtel users get a total of 39.2GB data for the period of 28 days along with 100 free SMSes. Earlier, the Rs 199 plan offered 1GB of 3G/4G per day data.

In comparison, the Rs 198 plan offered by Reliance Jio provides a total of 56GB 4G high-speed data with the daily cap of 2GB. The plan includes unlimited local, STD, and roaming voice calls. Jio users also get the traditional subscription to Jio suite of apps along with 100 SMSes for a period of 28 days.

Even as operators struggle to meet consumer expectations while battling each other, the telecom industry continues to reel under heavy financial stress. After the Union Budget 2018-19 presentation by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI) expressed anguish over the budget not addressing the industry’s key demands, such as cut in levies and taxes.

In a statement, COAI Chairman Rajan Mathews said that the industry is “saddened” to see that telecom, a bedrock for pushing the digital economy forward, “continues to remain an orphan“.

Meanwhile, Reliance Jio topped the chart of 4G broadband service providers for the 11th straight month by recording a peak download speed of 25.6 mbps for November 2017, according to data published by telecom regulator TRAI. Vodafone came a close second with a top download speed of 10 megabit per second (mbps) followed by Bharti Airtel at 9.8 mbps and Idea Cellular at 7 mbps in November 2017.
