The issue with points of interconnect (PoI) between Reliance Jio and incumbent telecom operators is showing no signs of stopping. Despite Jio’s claims, Airtel says it has provided enough PoI to Reliance Jio to support 20-25 million subscribers. It also says that call drops are being caused due to Jio’s under-preparedness and insufficient testing effort. As a result of this, Airtel claims, Jio’s subscribers face as many as 12 crore call failures a day while trying to connect to other networks like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular. Post our bilateral meeting on September 13 to premeditate on the matter of augmentation of PoI, we had analyzed the traffic figures at the interconnect links as well as your demands for projected capacity, the company said in a letter to Jio, dated September 26. Basis on our due diligence of these dynamics, we had provided 1,350 E1’s (interconnect points) on the very next day. This was followed by incremental capacity of 1,000 E1’s provided on pan-India basis on September 20, it said. “Unfortunately, despite the prompt and colossal effort put in by Airtel, as on date, only 2,484 E1s are live out of total capacity of 3,048 provided, primarily due to various reasons for delay attributable solely to Jio’s under preparedness and insufficient testing teams/efforts.”
Based on industry practice, 12,500 E1 ports (interconnect points, with technical parameters) are required for 22 million subscribers, said a Reliance Industries statement on August 18. As against this, the top three operators have released only 1,400 ports so far. In a bid to make its argument stronger, Reliance Jio on its website today, revealed operator-wise call drop data. The data revealed that of the 6.13 crore call attempts made to Airtel network on September 22, 4.8 crore or 78.4 percent failed. The failure on Vodafone network was higher at 84.1 percent with 3.95 crore out of 4.69 crore calls failing while 3.36 crore out of 4.39 crore calls made to Idea Cellular users failed.
The company further said that 81.5 percent out of 0.43 crore calls made to Airtel network during busy hours failed while 87.8 percent out of 0.26 crore calls to Vodafone dropped. Of the 0.28 crore calls made to Idea Cellular network during busy hours, 82.2 percent failed. Reliance Jio said that this data would be updated periodically.
