Bharti Airtel is scheduled to host an event today, where the network operator may announce network upgradations along with launching the long rumored VoLTE (Voice over LTE) service. While it is still unclear if the service will actually be announced, the Apple support page reportedly shows Bharti Airtel VoLTE as one of the supported networks for iPhones in India.
The Wireless carrier support and features for iPhone in India section on Apple’s support page lists VoLTE as supported services by Airtel. The only other operator to offer the service is Reliance Jio. It is worth noting that the VoLTE service through the operator is available only on Apple iPhone 6 and later.
While incumbent operators such as Vodafone, Idea Cellular and Airtel provide 4G services, they are yet to roll out VoLTE services in the country. Airtel’s VoLTE service has long been rumored to be under development. However, it has not been officially announced, and some users of compatible devices have reportedly received update that adds support for VoLTE. Recently, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 was also reported to have received an update for Airtel VoLTE, TelecomTalk.info reports. If the company indeed rolls out the service commercially, across compatible devices, it would bring India’s top operator neck-and-neck with Reliance Jio’s services. The support for VoLTE service aims to provide high-speed network experience as compared to traditional 4G services. As of now, Airtel is offering voice calls to 4G users through Circuit Switched Fall Back (CSFB) technology, which transfers subscribers to the GSM platform to make and receive calls while maintaining the 4G speeds. Launch of VoLTE services will serve right for the company which has been reeling under the pressure brought on by Reliance Jio. Since the commercial roll out of Jio’s 4G services, the Mukesh Ambani-led company has been basking in customer popularity owing to the ‘free voice and data’ plans. With VoLTE services, users will be able to enjoy voice calls at lower costs as the new protocol transmits voice data over LTE network, and offers superior call quality over traditional 3G or 2G connections.
