AK-47 maker Kalashnikov plans to take on Elon Musk’s Tesla with a retro-looking electric supercar

Kalashnikov, the Russian arms maker that is best known for making the AK-47 machine gun just unveiled a retro looking “electric supercar” at a defense expo outside Moscow. According to a report by AFP Moscow, the arms maker announced its plan to take on the Elon Musk’s Tesla in the electric automobile industry with this new prototype. The report pointed out that this new electric car comes in a retro and is inspired by “Izh-Kombi”, a rare Soviet hatchback car model from 1970s. The current name designated to this “electric supercar” is CV-1.

The arms maker claimed that CV-1 has been developed using “cutting-edge elements” that should be present in an “electric supercar”. The company added that is has added a “revolutionary inverter” in the car that will allow it to cover about 350km in one single charge. According to AFP, the Kalashnikov press office issued a statement, “This technology will let us stand in the ranks of global electric car producers such as Tesla and be their competitor.” It went on to add, “We were inspired by the experience of global market leaders in developing our concept.”

This is not the only effort that Kalashnikov has undertaken in recent time to expand its brand. As pointed by the report, the company recently launched a clothing line and other lines for “other civilian merchandise” that range from mobile phone covers to umbrellas.

Kalashnikov’s decision to enter the electric automobile market was met with a mixed reception where some users were excited with the prospect referring to the CV-1 as “cyberpunk” while some remained skeptical of the decision asking the company to stay away from cars.
